A blaze at an Alabama prison caused alarm as guards and emergency crews rushed in. Prisoners were evacuated with several women reported hysterical while firefighters fought the flames. The fire was believed accidental and under investigation.
Governors and seven eastern states met at Albany at the invitation of Governor Roosevelt to study compulsory unemployment insurance. After expert economists outlined its advantages, the group planned actions states might take individually or jointly to guard against future depressions. Attending were Governors Cross Connecticut Ely Massachusetts Larson New Jersey.
Pleas of guilty were entered by Grover C Porter and Elbert P Edwards before Judges Hildebrand and Chambers on home invasion and robbery charges. Porter received 2 to 6 years in the Western Penitentiary plus 2 to 4 years for robbery. sentences run concurrently. Edwards was sent to Huntingdon Reform School. Porter was captured after a pursuit by Constable A A Shoup. $162 taken was recovered. Edwards arrested at home. James Burley, 18, paroled for 3 years after pleading to stealing flour. Ellwood Case Andy Gennett fined 200 dollars and six months in jail for selling liquor, with parole possible after two months upon payment. Frank H. Bond, 55, a retired Erie merchant and former Pittsburgh resident, died from fumes in his closed garage. His body was found on the running board of his automobile by his wife after he failed to come inside. artificial respiration failed. Bond had moved to Erie 27 years ago and retired from business three years earlier.
Two Erie men, Alois Schliger and Richard Hinz, aged 22 and 20, confessed in writing to killing James Massing during a five month old holdup at a gas station. They were held without bail in communicado. Schliger cried I did it and I wanted a thrill. Hinz corroborated and said he planned to rob for thrills.

Harrisburg officials report the fifteenth annual state farm show drew 225000 attendees, triple the prior marks. The final day saw 13000 dollars in baby beeves and lambs sold by youth exhibitors, with grand champion baby beef selling for 485.90 to a Harrisburg hotel packing plant and grand champion lambs selling 97.80 to an Allentown plant. Fred Fox of Clinton County exhibited the lambs, and the Lenox Grange won first prize in the new state dramatic tournament for She N her daughter.

The Nye committee questioned Dauphin County treasurer Thomas J. Nelley and Charles C. Cumbler about a secret county fund used in Senator James J. Davis's Pennsylvania campaign. Nelley disclosed a $20,000 accumulative fund from prior campaigns and a separate $17,135 fund for the fall campaign.
