City council may trim New Castle tax millage this year

City Controller Lyman C. Hughes says city funds are healthy and a surplus will carry into the new fiscal year. With appropriations near last year level, no millage increase is expected and a slight reduction may be possible if funding for improvements is kept in check. Taxpayers welcome a potential cut as economy measures continue.

New Trial Sought in Reddington Railway Case

Motions for a new trial and for judgment notwithstanding the verdict were filed by C H Akens in the suit of John E and Catherine Reddington against Mahoning and Shenango Railway and Light Co. The verdict awarded 2000 to John E and 5500 to Catherine for injuries from a car jumping the track on West Washington Street. Mrs Reddington says a mailbox crashed through the window when the car hit a pole to which the box was attached. The attorney argues the verdict is excessive and unsupported by the evidence.

Coat Stolen From Store Window Dummy

Police report a raincoat size 38 was stolen from a dummy in front of J. Milliman's shop on South Son street this morning.

Knights of Pythias Lodges Plan Golden Jubilee Observance

Four local Knights of Pythias lodges will host an open house and program on Thursday February 19 to mark the Golden Jubilee. A committee from Western Star Fidels Robert Blum and New Castle lodges will organize details and choose a venue, likely the K of P hall in the city building, with events aligning to the supreme lodge official program. The main celebration will take place in Washington DC that day with knights from across the country, and some locals may travel there.

Swenson To Draw Temporary Plans For Gardner Avenue Viaduct

Representatives from city county railroads and the traction company met to authorize Engineer Swenson to prepare temporary plans for the Gardner Avenue viaduct. Plans cost about 2500 dollars and aim to establish proportional payments by each party with the state covering 60000 dollars. Approval by Waterways commissions is sought at Harrisburg before a further meeting to sign contracts in this city. The city will maintain the roadway and the structure must resist locomotive smoke.

City Extends Conduit On Croton Avenue

Superintendent Lusk and the city engineer report the extension of the conduit on Croton Avenue to the Mercantile Building is requested by the Union Telephone company. The request is granted despite opposition to tearing up the street now. The conduit extension will likely be completed very soon.

Ten Year Lighting Contract Is Plan

New Castle council negotiating with New Castle Electric Company for a ten year electric light contract. City seeks 5 cent per kilowatt hour for commercial use and 48 dollars per year per watt hour for dwellings with a 10 percent early payment discount and 50 cent monthly minimum. Mercantile rate 4 3 4 cents per kilowatt hour with 10 percent discount and $4 minimum. Arc street lighting reduces price to 40 dollars yearly per arc. Curb lights on Washington street included and past year’s light costs settled at new rates. Free rating for city buildings remains as in the old contract.

New P L E Freight Station Opens With Modern Facilities

The P L E E freight terminal between Produce and Grove streets is now in use with a $75 000 to $100 000 steel brick structure. Erie freight moves to the east side of the city, freeing the Westside for a new passenger depot. The building spans almost 300 by 50 feet with two story offices and sheltered platforms on both sides. Two large scales and full loading capability accompany the modern yard.

Eight men detained for box car robbery on Hillsville siding

Railroad detectives arrested eight men Andy Boseman Mike Podenough John Morrow Frank Brock John Gollock Steve Mankowitch Mike Rock and Joe Rubish after a Hillsville box car robbery. They faced larceny charges and hearings set for next Wednesday. Prisoners were from Struthers and jailed in Youngstown before repatriation to Lawrence County case. Tobacco cakes and sausage reportedly stolen.

Nye Named Acting Postmaster After Butler's Death

John Hamilton Nye of Ellwood City designated by the surety company to act as postmaster pending a successor to J E Butler who died recently. Nye will take charge at once and a lively contest for the postmastership is anticipated.

Request filed with city council asks exoneration of a 50.82 dollar tax on property owned by the Methodist church used for charity work. Council as a committee of the whole will consider the matter.

News Beats Herald Nearly Three To One In City Canvass

The News reports a preliminary canvass of twenty streets in New Castle showing 195 subscribers to The News and 75 to the Herald by Jenkins and 146 to The News and 55 to the Herald by Hudson. The paper claims The News leads nearly 2 to 1 and predicts over 3 to 1 in a full city survey.
