Fire Chief Antonio cuts fires and reforms city department

After two weeks in office Fire Chief Antonio has reduced arson crises, improved scheduling, and boosted morale. Arson arrests followed police stakeouts with Mayor Sands aiding the schedule shift. The city plans more inspections and fire prevention efforts as manpower changes and grievances are addressed.

County Commissioners offer wage freeze if workers join

Lawrence County commissioners vow to forgo a $6,000 raise and keep salaries at $15,000 for four years if county employees also accept a four year wage freeze. Commissioner Chairman Frank Vitril cites tight finances amid ongoing contract talks with Local 964 and AFSCME Local 2092 while noting he hasn’t drawn a raise since 1972.

Nuclear power plans canceled by CAPCO utilities

Five Ohio and Pennsylvania utilities scrap four nuclear plants due to political and regulatory uncertainty after Three Mile Island. CAPCO terminates two 906 MW reactors at Davis-Besse Oak Harbor and two 1,260 MW reactors near Berlin Heights, Ohio, $7.3 billion project. Existing units at North Perry and Shippingport face schedule shifts. one North Perry unit moves to May 1984, the other to May 1988, and Shippingport to May 1986.

City seeks state aid for Ray Street reconstruction

The city will apply to the state for 100000 dollars to help fund Ray Street work including sewers and curbs. A public hearing by City Council at 6 30 p m tomorrow will discuss the application. Budget shows 566860 for Bay Street and Bell Avenue. Officials expect to raise mileage pay to 18 cents a mile at the 7 30 p m meeting. Solicitor Piccione to present opinion on recent mayoral hirings.
