A mother Mrs. Andrew Harvilla and her four children died in a blaze at their Middleport home near Pottsville. The 1 year old baby perished with the mother as she rushed back inside to try to rescue the infant. The surviving relatives include the husband and another child who were away visiting.
The United States and Great Britain signed a treaty at the State Department expanding the right to stop and search ships beyond the three mile limit to curb rum running. The accord, one of the shortest on record, would allow U S customs and coast guard to board suspected British vessels within about 12 miles of shore. The deal also permits British vessels to bring liquor into American ports under seal. Negotiations with other nations are expected to follow. Sir Auckland Geddes likely signs off as ambassador, with Sir Esme Howard to succeed him.

In Stockbridge Massachusetts 12 armed bandits cut through two four ton doors of a concrete cellar vault at Eden Hill the Mayer home disarming guards and seizing $100000 in liquor. They arrived by motor truck and touring car and cut telephone lines before the Volstead act took effect.
Sharon authorities reported a 1923 model Ford coupe stolen in the area. The car had an Ohio license plate but the number was not released.
