Plans approved to connect Wampum Chewton West Pittsburg Hazel Dell and Ellwood City with New Castle and Rich suburban territory. Retail trade opened as lines from the south converge at Chewton according to the adopted plan.
The Mahoning and Shenango Valley Railway and Light Co backed by a major carrier says construction will start after state commission approval to connect New Castle with Beaver Falls via Wampum West Pittsburg Ellwood City and Chewton. Plans include two routes to New Castle Junction with private rights avoiding new street franchises and a possible North Hill extension to serve outlying areas.
A Bell Telephone society meeting is held at the Bell exchange this evening with plant chiefs gathering this afternoon. Plant Chief Krause will speak this evening along with Supt. H. O. Brown and C. A. Wilder traffic superintendent.
New Castle city council has formed a list of city demands in settlement talks with the New Castle Electric Company and will present them to officials today.
The YWCA history traces its roots to 1907 during Dr. Chapman’s evangelistic campaign. Miss Carrie L. Jeffery chairs the temporary group formed after Mrs. Gates urged organization, with Mrs. T. A. Kimes as secretary and Mrs. J. B. Griffith as treasurer, plus several committees appointed amid 220 early supporters.
Michigan Central passenger No 7 en route to Chicago was robbed between Jackson and Parma by four men two men covered crew and four search through sleepers taking passenger valuables without firing a shot crew unaware of the crime until it occurred two miles east of Parma where the robbers vanished. Representatives from railroads meet county and city officials at city hall to discuss Gardner avenue viaduct financing and rights of way with urgency to finalize a contract and start work.
Rev. McQuilkin closes his stay in New Castle this evening after aiding Dr. R L Lanning in week long evangelistic services. As pastor of a large United Presbyterian church he draws big crowds and aims to address "The Unanswerable Question" at 7 45 with Miss Thomas and Samuel Lewis singing. All are welcome.
Death notices list Lucia Coliccia age 30 of 1219 Croton avenue and infant Di Lorenzo of 1206 Croton avenue. Also noted are William Moore age 78 Sharonene Hubbard age 80 Mattoon Hartford Rachel Allen age 81 Mercer county and N B Carter Washington town.
Jury awards James E. Reddington 2 000 and Catherine Reddington 5 500 in damages against Mahoning and Shenango Railway and Light Co for injuries from a derailment on West Washington street and wife’s medical bills. John H. Corban sues Lehigh Portland Cement for 10 000 injuries after a platform incident while employed, claiming lack of guards.
Persistent chatter among E and A division employees of the Pennsylvania Railroad alleges upcoming transfers or changes. Officials say no action has occurred yet and final orders would come from Pittsburgh. Rumors name Andrew G. Murphy and John C. Hanrahan as possible transfers, with L B Robertson and R F Kron also discussed.
W. H. Currie sues W. O. McCartney and A. L. McElwain in Perry township for opening a judgment of 215.40 on a note tied to a horse sale. The note allegedly bears interest despite sale advertising that notes were not to bear interest and the plaintiff claims misrepresentation of the horse. Judge Porter presiding.
Washington reacts to Baron Makino's speeches on the Californian alien land law and Mexico. Officials view the statements as provocations aimed at pressuring the United States, signaling possible Japanese actions against U S policy before the Pacific contest. Bryan expressed surprise at the Mexico note while Wilson learned of Makino's remarks from newspapers.
The Greater Pittsburg Ministerial Union plans a county wide drive to stop all liquor licenses. Petitions to refuse licenses will be circulated after a Sunday service and remonstrances will be filed with the court. Dr. George W. Shelton says the effort unites Protestant and Catholic groups in a broad campaign.
Damages of 500 dollars sought by Robert L. Palen in a suit against Ellwood City tried before Judge Porter. Palen owns a Crescent avenue lot and says street grading cut five feet, tore out steps, damaged shrubbery, and hindered coal delivery to his cellar. James A. Gardner represents Palen and J. W. Humphrey represents the borough. Jury deliberation occurred shortly before noon.
Tokyo reports the marine ministry demanded 150 million dollars for twelve dreadnoughts but after sharp debate the appropriation was pared to 80 million. The move frames Japan’s naval expansion and budget priorities in the Imperial Diet.
New Castle saw a record YMCA membership drive lead to 1,895 members announced with six new memberships since the report. Division C led with 274 memberships and 211 for the campaign, while Division B and other teams rallied for second and third places as the drive ended in triumph.
