Two convicts Paul Custer and Arthur Phillips fled Rockview State Penitentiary but were captured within an hour by guards after being spotted crossing a creek leaving prison grounds. Custer, 24, serves six to 12 years for larceny and burglary in Somerset County, Phillips, 21, five to 10 years for burglary in Centre County. A 1953 law increased penalties for prison breach.
Odel Newton, 45, of Philadelphia, became trapped for 12 hours when his arm wedged between a folding bed frame and mattress spring. Friends pulled him free as firemen cut him loose. he suffered a broken arm and serious shock.
Governor John S. Fine issued a proclamation designating February 1 as National Freedom Day in Pennsylvania. The date marks the 89th anniversary of Lincoln submitting to the states for ratification the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery.

A four alarm blaze in McKeesport Pennsylvania heavily damaged the Monteray Inn first floor and five second floor apartments. Six people were injured including three firefighters and five women treated at a Pittsburgh hospital. Damage estimated at 150 000.
Gov. John S. Fine departs the state capitol for a two week Florida vacation. He will attend a governors conference session in Atlanta and then visit Miami Beach as a guest of state commerce secretary A. J. Sordoni.
John F. McNelis, 64, president of the North Philadelphia Trust Company, died today as the bank's merger with Girard Trust Corn Exchange Bank takes effect after business hours. He had been ill for several days and died at Chestnut Hill hospital.
In Panmunjom Indian guards opened the neutral zone gates to 347 unrepatiated prisoners including 21 Americans but none left. The prisoners planned a sit down strike after Indian guards withdrew. The Indian spokesman warned Red Guards would block any attempt to move south. Gen Thimayya announced midnight withdrawal of guards and custody. Spokesmen said the unrepats would stay in the camp. Sgt Richard G Corden of East Providence led the 21 unrepatriated Americans.
