City police arrested Gary Couch and Willie McClinton in connection with the Tuesday night shooting death of 55 year old Alex Phillips. Couch faces an assault with intent to kill charge with a $3,000 cash bond. McClinton, held on an old Star Market robbery warrant, has a $1,500 cash bond. Both arraigned and jailed. no date set for a hearing.
The consumer price index rose 0.4 percent in December, the first full month under Nixon's Phase II, with food prices driving much of the gain. Supermarket food jumps 1.3 percent, while nonfood items held steady despite higher new car prices and gasoline costs.
New York violinist Michael Rabin a former child prodigy who struggled with epilepsy died from a fractured skull during a seizure. He was found in his Manhattan home Wednesday night at age 35.
County Commissioner Frank Vitril unveiled a revised 1972 budget, not consulted on, with a 14 mill tax rate up from 13 and about 2.9 million in expenditures. The plan adds 45000 for an addressograph machine, boosts court allocations, and shows year end surpluses and revised revenue projections.
The two top administrators at the Youth Development Center were asked to resign. Director Donald D. MacDougald and assistant William Bennard were told by Department of Public Welfare officials to seek other positions as the new state administration pushes changes to state institutions. MacDougald hopes for a Pennsylvania posting. Bernard’s status remains tied to a shift to install a director who can appoint his own deputy, with the YDC timeline noted as 1967 joining the delinquent boys facility in 1968.
FBI identifies Richard Charles LaPoint, 23, who commandeered the Las Vegas to Reno flight with a fake bomb. He bailed out at 12 000 feet near Akron Colorado after collecting 50000 dollars in ransom and 52 passengers. He sprained his ankle and wrist on landing and was hospitalized in Sterling Colorado awaiting transfer to Denver for charges.
Alfred H. Owens ends a 48 year career as bank president while Charles M. Rhodes is elected to succeed him. Rhodes becomes president of the 81 year old Citizens National Bank and Owens remains as a director. Also elected were senior and vice presidents and several trust officers with a list of directors and emeritus director.
The Hong Kong flu, spreading in Allegheny County, worries state health officials as investigations continue. W B Scharach of the Health Department notes the strain resembles the 1968 Hong Kong variant. Allegheny County reports 4,741 flu cases with no leveling off, compared with 4,428 in the 1968-69 winter.
In Philadelphia only eight flu cases were reported this winter yet officials say the figure is almost meaningless due to few doctors testing for influenza. Health experts note many with fever cough and aches stay home while labs often show no flu.
