AFSCME members at the county courthouse walked off at 3 05 P M forming a shivering picket line along Court Street. About 70 workers from various offices joined demanding better pay benefits and hours with talks halted. Union leader Lisbeth A Long says the county remains far apart on money sick leave and a longer workday while construction workers watch from windows and some refuse to cross the line.
Ellwood City police officers treated and released after arresting John Joseph Petro who allegedly tried to run them down with his car. State charges include aggravated assault recklessly endangering others resisting arrest disorderly conduct and drunk driving. Police chased Petro through Wayne Township Ellwood City and the Line Avenue extension before he drove into a field and backed into a cruiser attempting to strike the officers.
Police say Petro of Wampum Road rammed the officers’ cruiser and tried to run them down. Officers Chris Hardie and Henry Paul Glogowski chased him at 1.15 a.m. today after he sped and ran a red light. Petro was subdued, handcuffed, arraigned by District Justice Howard B. Hanna, and jailed in default of bond. He faces multiple vehicle code violations in addition to criminal charges.

A severe fire tore through a Hoboken tenement early today with unconfirmed reports of up to 10 dead and 19 missing. Firefighters fought the blaze for about three hours as embers sparked minor fires nearby. Injured tenants, firefighters, and police were taken to St Mary Hospital Hoboken St Francis Community Health Center and Christ Hospital Jersey City. Cause not immediately known.
Sallisaw Oklahoma UPI reports a famed marijuana loving mouse that raided the district attorney’s evidence room is believed dead after being beaten by Sequoyah County Jail inmates. Officials say a jail resident, a mental patient, allegedly bit the mouse before guards intervened.
President Carter proposes three regional commissions to promote economic development in the East Midwest and South. The Mid Atlantic Mid America and Mid South Regions will cover Delaware New Jersey parts of Maryland New York Pennsylvania non Appalachian counties and 210 non Appalachian counties in Alabama Kentucky Mississippi and Tennessee respectively. The initiative aims to bolster private sector growth while reducing federal regulations.
