Thousands of volunteers aid a massive bunker oil spill cleanup around San Francisco Bay after a Standard Oil tanker collision. KSAN runs an ecology switchboard as Standard Oil deploys 500 employees. authorities and volunteers coordinate bird rescue, shoreline cleanup, and coastline protection.
Richard Burkes aged 23 was released on a 500 dollar surety of the peace bond after pleading guilty to related charges. Police responded to an eight week old baby’s assault at the Burkes home on Epworth Avenue around 1:50 a.m. He surrendered the child after resisting officers and threats were made to shoot. Charges by Mrs. Burkes were dropped.
Washington unions accuse Postmaster General Blount of trying to bar grievances to Congress and challenge his congressional liaison office. Negotiations cover 650,000 workers and may last months as the government moves toward the postal corporation setup after June.
The New Castle League of Women Voters plans to press for modern sewage disposal facilities in Neshannock Township. A meeting at 8 p.m. January 28 will be held at the Pulaski Road home of Mrs Janet Verane to discuss how to proceed. The group may later consider a metropolitan sewerage system.
Britain’s first nationwide postal and telecommunications strike left the country without mails or telegrams. Thousands of girl telephone operators ignored strike orders. Postal workers seek a 15 percent pay rise as union talks continue. Locomotive drivers threaten to strike for a 25 percent wage boost, risking rail service and London Underground disruption. The postal walkout began at midnight with 230,000 members of the Union of Postal Workers. Telephon e operators stayed until 8 am per orders. Union leader Tom Jackson hailed a 100 percent success after early talks facilitated by Employment Minister Robert Carr.

Producers Council Inc. Pittsburgh chapter met nine times yearly with architects and engineers in New Castle at Troggio's Restaurant. Displays from PPG Industries showed a heated window with outer pane electrified to regulate indoor temperature and privacy. American Standard Plumbing highlighted ceramic cartridge faucets and handicapped lavatory gear. Columbia Gas and Zonolite Division of W R Grace exhibited gas and insulation products with future residential usefulness noted.
Carmen Benincase of 806 High St was selected by Harry Mack to lead the February Heart Fund drive in Lawrence County with a $12,000 goal to combat heart and blood vessel diseases. Proceeds support research, education and community service by a voluntary health agency dedicated to heart health. Benincase works for the New Castle Sanitation Authority and belongs to several clubs and societies.
Anthony Cioffi, head of the city zoning board, was fined 100 by District Justice Merle J. Hildebrand for a zoning violation tied to a Highland Ave property housing Tic Toc Market. The parking lot behind the store opened after the ordinance and requires an appeal within 10 days if challenged.
The United Auto Workers tentatively gains a study of a four day 40 hour week at Chrysler as part of the new contract talks that averted a Chrysler strike. Douglas Fraser called the development exciting while Ford’s Canadian workers also walked out briefly in a separate dispute.
Al Ahram reported that the central committee of the Palestinian Guerrilla movement has reversed its stance to back a political settlement in the Middle East. Al Fatah said the group issued no statement, while the 27 member central committee reportedly approved a new course after Jordanian conflicts and renewed fighting earlier this month.
President Nixon ordered work halted on the cross Florida barge canal project after spending about 50 million dollars. The 107 mile canal from Mayport to Yankeetown would have affected the Oklawaha River and was halted to prevent permanent damage as urged by the Council on Environmental Quality.

Astronauts Shepard Roosa and Mitchell rehearsed the countdown and spent over two hours aboard the spacecraft completing midflight checks signaling preparations for the 9 a.m. EST start. The nine day mission includes 102 hours of active work with five rest periods to cover nearly a full week.
