Tunnel Rats Battle Viet Cong In Subterranean Clash
Marines and South Vietnamese troops swept the Batangan Peninsula and fought 30 feet underground in a tunnel network. 23 Viet Cong were killed and 136 captured as 3,785 guerrilla suspects were rounded up. Elsewhere, attacks on two U.S. bases near Saigon and Ban Me Thuot left six Americans dead and 17 wounded.

Soviet Union proposes talks on limiting nuclear arms
The Soviet Union in its first bid to the Nixon administration urged talks on curbing the arms race including anti ballistic missiles. It said agreement on mutual restriction and eventual reduction of strategic nuclear delivery systems is feasible though difficult and called for rapid entry into force of the nuclear nonproliferation treaty. The statement also urged progress on Kosygin's nine point plan and warned of strengthening socialist security while criticizing NATO and Western bases.
