Gov. George M. Leader reiterated he would veto a stand-alone 3 percent sales tax and only sign a bill if it is clearly the Republicans' half of a 50-50 tax program. He insisted the Democratic Party will not assume responsibility for a sales tax and accused Republicans of a scheme to burden Democrats.
Heavy snow hits Newc Vegas and surrounding areas causing motorists to become stranded across hills and streets. Chains become a necessity for those lacking winter treads while officials work to clear roads and warn drivers.

About 2400 Pittsburgh area Republicans are expected to attend a $100 per plate dinner marking the third anniversary of Eisenhower's inauguration. A multi state dragnet targeted escapee Leslie Irvin and a companion after his Gibson County jail break during a snowstorm. Police and witnesses identified Irvin, dubbed the mad dog killer, as dangerous and likely to resist capture. Authorities note possible outside help and fear retaliation against witnesses at his trial.
A head-on collision on Route 982 in Westmoreland County Latrobe PA killed 22-year-old Stephen Petrus of Lloydsville. Petrus rode with his brother 25-year-old John Petrus who also survived. Richard Stein 16 of Latrobe sustained serious injuries.
Dr. Paul H. Wilson was elected president of the Community Chest for New Castle and Vicinity at a Chest board meeting at The Castleton. He succeeds Sam H. Byers, who became first vice president. New officers include Herman W. Green as second vice president Lauri G. Laurell secretary and Alfred H. Owens treasurer.
In the annual election of officers of the Credit Bureau of Greater New Castle Inc. George M. Marquis was elected president succeeding ill health ridden John S. Abel who had served ten years. New officers include Charles E. McGrath as 1st Vice President and J. Fred Rentz as 2nd Vice President. The board lists T. E. Chambers Norman Clark Harry Elder Walter Dietterle Harvey Bush Ivor Davis Jr Ed C Williams Howard M. Kirk John S Abel Albert Perelman Alvin Shenhan. The manager reported a 21 percent business increase from 1954 prompting larger quarters on the second floor of the L S & T building.
President Eisenhower makes his first major public appearance since his heart attack to help the Republican Party raise funds for the 1956 campaign.
