Victims Often Knew Perpetrators In 1982 84 Crime Wave

UPI reports the Justice Department Bureau of Justice Statistics found that over half of the 20 million violent crimes from 1982 to 1984 involved offenders known to victims. Friends and acquaintances committed 31 percent, relatives 8 percent, and others seen by sight 11 percent. Robbery tended to involve strangers, while homicide was least likely.

U S agrees to not seek death penalty in hijack case

The Justice Department will not seek the death penalty against Mohammad Ali Hamadei in connection with the 1985 TWA Flight 847 hijacking. West German officials indicated extradition would be blocked if the suspect faced possible execution, prompting the U.S. to waive the death penalty request. Hamadei, 22, is among four Lebanese Shiite Muslims charged with air piracy and related crimes in the hijacking that killed Navy SEAL Robert Stethem. The plane departed Athens June 14, 1985, and was held over Beirut for hostage duration. The criminal indictment against Hamadei was unsealed by a federal judge.
