William O. Douglas dies at 81 longtime Supreme Court justice
William O. Douglas, who served on the Supreme Court longer than any other judge, died at 10:09 a.m. at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The 81-year-old retired in 1975 after a stroke, following pneumonia and kidney failure. Appointed in 1939 by FDR, Douglas championed individual freedoms and privacy, shaping rulings on segregation and one person one vote. He weathered illness for years, had a pacemaker since 1968, and suffered a stroke in 1974 before stepping down.
