Cause of Legionnaires Disease Traced to New Germ
Six months of medical detective work identifies a large slow growing gram negative bacillus as the probable cause of Legionnaires Disease that killed 29 last summer. The germ infected 29 of 33 patients in a pneumonia like illness among visitors to the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel during a July American Legion convention. The organism does not appear to spread person to person and transmission mode remains unclear.
