The Fuel Administrator Harry A. Garfield reported improved fuel conditions and rapid progress in clearing congestion at major railway terminals. Loaded cars are moving widely and better weather aids the effort, though full results are not expected until early next week.
Dog and rabbit fanciers from New Castle earned prizes at a Youngstown dog show this week. Ralph Mitchell won a silver cup for his Airedale Hectorang. William Hayford claimed first on two English bulldogs. E S Michener won for his Airedale. W R Lyon earned two dachshund prizes. Charles Morris received several prizes on rabbits.
A large southwest storm moving toward the Ohio valley is forecast by government forecaster C. L. Mitchell. Chicago will be affected only by the storm’s northern edge, with severe conditions expected mainly to the south.
Johnstown merchants will close their businesses for ten weeks starting Monday. Liquor dealers will decide next week whether to close for the same period, weather conditions noted as a factor.
Sheriff Boyd seizes the Olympia restaurant run by Mike and John Karlavasitis in the city building. A sale of nine tables 54 chairs 500 pounds of coffee show cases and fixtures is set for January 25 between 9 and 10 am.
Copenhagen dispatch says Germany aims a separate peace with Ukraina with talks advancing to territorial questions. Berlin pledges a program including Ukrainian Poland Galicia and Romania, Austria gains Romanian land and Balkans, and Russian-occupied areas to be organized under German protection.
An American liner reached a British port after sighting four German submarines. One sub possibly hit by the ship's guns during a foggy night encounter. The liner escaped and destroyers arrived, with no panic aboard.
Street fighting erupts in Petrograd with barricades and machine guns in front of the Tauris Palace. Bolshevik forces clash with demonstrators, several killed and many wounded as former minister M. Tchernoff is elected assembly president. Kerensky reportedly seen in the city.
Only 37 applications for liquor licenses were filed at the courthouse today compared with 74 last year, a drop of exactly half. Last year 32 licenses were granted. all existing holders re-applied and seven new applicants joined. One filer went bankrupt over the year, leaving 31 licensed at year end. Taxation and higher liquor prices reduce profits and consumption, with no anticipated fight.
At the Hague on January 19 reports say German deserters are increasing and frequent clashes occur on the Dutch frontier. In a battle with loyal Dutch forces, one loyal trooper was killed and several others wounded as the mutineers attempted to cross from Belgium into Holland.
John C. Carr of West Washington street bought the Hotel Sherman on South Mill street from John L. Herbold. The furnishings and the property owned by Mrs. Roberts were included. Carr filed for a liquor license after taking possession and plans his next steps for operation.
Co. F. Cook filed an information before Alderman Green accusing James Devine a former railroad employee of disorderly conduct. Devine pleaded guilty and was fined and assessed costs.
Court house officials say the pending order from Fuel Administrator Garfield does not apply to county buildings and the court house will be open as usual on Monday despite inquiries.
Washington report says the senate sub committee probing the coal shortage nears its end and plans to report legislation to remedy the stringency. The fuel dictator Dr. Harry A. Garfield may be legislated out of office as the panel shifts support toward a stronger central authority to manage the coal situation.
A Monday evening gathering will be held at the grocers hall on Neshannock avenue. All city retail merchants and members of the merchants division of the board of trade and Grocers' association are requested to attend. A proposed move, described as a departure for merchants, will be discussed.
Citizens who have not paid the 1917 school tax face forced payment through ward levies. Work began in the First, Third and Fourth wards yesterday and will start in the remaining wards Monday. Two thousand dollars remains unpaid. Mr and Mrs Nelson Davis of Woodlawn returned home after visiting W L and D J Davis of the K L M block.
All members of Dan Leasure Camp 24 and veterans of the Spanish American War are asked to meet at the lodge rooms in the city building on Wednesday evening January 23 to attend a patriotic service at the First Baptist church. Signed E. E. Buschman.

Paris reports the death of Ivan Nock of Baltimore, a member of the French Foreign Legion. Nock was severely wounded in a trench raid on January 18 and had twice been cited in French army orders for bravery.
Mrs H A Rugh of North Jefferson street and Mrs Paul Smith of Cleveland have returned from Staunton Military school. En route home Mrs Smith was taken ill and is confined to bed in Mrs Rugh's home.
Secretary of State Lansing was confined to his home with a severe cold, his physician saying the condition is not serious.
Hogs rose 95 cents per hundredweight to a record 21 dollars in Pittsburg Pennsylvania. Light receipts due to freight congestion blamed for the rise.
Death record lists William Henry Arden aged 64 of 315 Lincoln Avenue and Dorothy Brown aged 12 of Hendersonville North Carolina. Also named is Mrs Sara Clendening aged 62 with an address in Corapolis.
