Federal agents grilled two suspects in the kidnapping and murder of 10 year old Charles Mattson in Tacoma Washington. Harold Nathan arrived with agents from Tacoma to assist the investigation and two men were in custody for examination. In spite of rain the Shenango river dropped about three and a half feet from Saturday’s high mark of 14.1 feet while the Neshannock also fell. New Castle police directed downtown detours around the Sherman hotel fire as hose lines blocked Washington and Mill streets. Early icy streets yielded to a moderating temperature and rain continued with some fog making driving hazardous on the New Castle New Bedford road. Many 1936 plates remain on cars in city lots as 1937 plates were not yet renewed.

Two Accidents on Ellwood City Road Reported
Two separate crashes occurred at the New Castle Ellwood City road near the city line at 11:30 p m. Leonard E Boyd of Beaver and John H Bane Jr of 929 East Hazel street were involved in the first collision traveling in opposite directions. A reckless driving charge was to be filed against Bane. During the investigation a second accident happened at the same spot when a car at the scene was started and struck Elias Charles of 424 East Long Avenue.
