Ephraim Hoover, longtime iron worker and oldest Pioneer Odd Fellow in New Castle, died after a long illness. He joined the local organization in 1856 and once owned the tract now known as Hoover Heights. He had been bedridden for nine weeks before passing Monday afternoon.
J Norman Martin and A Martin Graham closed buying fifteen acres in Sixth ward for the Grasselli Chemical Company. A mammoth plant to employ 600 is planned north of Shenango Pottery, with foundations to begin once weather allows. The site extends from the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie railroad to the Shenango River and will house plants producing sulfuric acid and ammonia.
In Spokane Washington on January 1, five IWW members and Touls Terazier were sentenced by Judge George W. Stocker to from 1p days to five months for conspiracy. James Wilson and FE. J. Wroote got six months in county jail. They warned they would not appeal but would serve. Mayor Pratt and Governor Hay praised officials for ending the anarchistic activity.
New Castle shows a thriving outlook with 15 acre Grasselli works employing 600 workers and a $150 900 paper plant to hire 100. heavy railroad yard expansions near Lawrence Junction Moravia to employ 1000, plus steady runs at Shenango Penn Eng works and other plants. Local mills and factories including Carnegie steel Shenango cement list steel and can plants stay active. optimism grows for streetcar projects and regional mineral development.
Five members attended the finance committee meeting last night and no action was taken on turning over the library to the city. Mrs. Griffith and Mrs. Royce urged the plan, citing demand for books, but the issue was laid over until the next meeting to obtain broader member input. The YWCA and others hoped for a decision. the proposal had been discussed previously on December 13.

New York reports show Russians among the most convicted groups in magistrates courts last year, surpassed only by native born Americans. Italy Ireland and Greece also appear high. In 1909 total arrests reached 147,595 with 46,021 for felonies and misdemeanors. In 1909 there were 175,271 arrests.
Mrs. Sarah Cartwright reports her husband Wesley Cartwright to Alderman Ranney for desertion and non support. Cartwright was arrested and will face a hearing on Saturday in Greenville.
The Mahoning and Shenango Railway & Light Co failed to run special cars for New Castle residents heading to Youngstown on Sunday. Weather disruption and limited power reduced the plan from six cars to none by noon, prompting a special Pennsylvania train at 7:15 pm with 90 cent round trips. The Y M C A refunds trolley tickets and urges attendance.
New York dispatch reports Franz Josef Shubert, described as degenerate and mentally weak, arrested after the shooting and murder of Robbie Lomas during coasting in Highbridge Park. He will be brought to hospital to try to identify by the wounded boy, Arthur Shibley, in a possible identification proceeding.
A boy named Shubert, living by begging at the Nassau hotel Bowery, escapes a man and is taken in for questioning as authorities link him to the Lomas child shooting. Diary extracts show repeated head-shaking, past arrests for vagrancy at Snake Hill New Jersey, and minor daily misdeeds.
Miss Mayme Swogger and Mrs J F Evans wed at Rev M W Keith parsonage at noon. Carr ie Evans and Car Belles attended. Newlyweds depart at 12 50 for Denver after a month trip to western points then plan to reside back in the city.
One year old James Carr son of Mr and Mrs E A Carr East State street fell from his high chair Monday and sustained a deep forehead gash requiring several stitches to close.

Ww. E. Patton of Hickory township has returned from a two months Porto Rico visit and spoke highly of the country. Miss Ruth Drenner of Warren Ohio, after a stay with Miss Pearl Neff of South Mill street, returns home. Mr. and Mrs. William McGivern of Chestnut street are in Cleveland due to the illness of the latter's brother Frank Kane.

In New York on January 18, 1920, 13 bids for feeding Ellis Island immigrants were opened. The lowest offered 20 cents a day per person for three years, while 35 cents was the highest. The bids will go to Washington with the commissioner's recommendation after canceling Fritz Brodt's contract. The Union News company among the bidders offered the present low price.
John Knee of Sheep Hill was taken into custody about midnight under the curfew law. Before the mayor he stated his parents were dead and he lived with another family of the same name. He cried, offered no clear reason for being out, and said he always attended school. The mayor discharged him and urged him to return home and go to school.
Rumor confirmed the Cole Brothers circus wintering in Corry will be sold January 28 at the fair grounds. James D Downs, principal owner, reportedly wishes to retire from the white tops. The property will be auctioned to the highest bidders with expected attendance of prominent circus figures.
Death records show Hannah St. Reno 89 from Reno township and Ephram Hoover 84 of 46 South Mill Street. John S. Moore 58 of 120 Oak Street Chester and Sadie Snyder 52 of Ellwood City also listed with ages and addresses. Margarett Richards 3 months and William Morgan Leden 6 months noted at 350 Cunningham Avenue and 409 South Jefferson Street respectively.
John S Moore died suddenly at 128 Oak Street on Tuesday morning at 4 o clock from heart trouble. He was 1 year and 7 days old and survived by a wife three sons and three daughters and seven grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at 2:20 p m at the family residence with interment at Oak Park cemetery.
New York reports Pat Moore of Philadelphia defeated Harry Thomas of England in a bantamweight bout at the Olympic Athletic Club in Harlem. Moore dominated the exchanges, even as Thomas fought through the rounds in a strong showing.
