Seven Boards Back Area Technical High School Plan

Seven of eight Lawrence County school boards approved an area technical vocational high school with Union Area voting against. Irwin W. Stankard praised the step to aid students and the economy, noting only a few districts could have blocked it. The plan seeks state approval and discusses articles of agreement. City Council Rejects Pay Raises in 3-2 Vote

The city council voted 3-2 along party lines to wipe out planned raises for 260 full time employees, estimated to cost about 45000 dollars. The move ushers in an economy push and could prompt a mid year tax increase. remaining officials defended their positions as necessary. The ordinance would also cut the newly designated fire marshal and reduce fire lieutenants from seven to six, with continued coverage noted on page 2.

Volant and Reed Farms Dominate Merino Prizes

Two Volant and two Slippery Rock farmers swept open Merino divisions at the State Farm Show. J. K. and W. McConnell of Volant RD 3 earned 14 ribbons with a first in rain and multiple seconds, thirds, and fourths, including a ram placement. Russell A. and Clair L. Reed of Slippery Rock RD 3 collected the remaining 14 awards with eight firsts and a champion ram. The McConnells also earned ram and other breed placements across multiple classes.

Cobalt Center Memorial Recalling Dr Kaplan Named

New Castle Hospital renames its radiation cancer center the Dr Eliah Kaplan Memorial Radiation Center in honor of Dr Kaplan who died at age 79. Sister Mary John announced final approval by the U S Atomic Energy Commission and dedication set for 1 30 p m January 29 with a plaque marking the center. The program covers diagnosis surgery drugs and high voltage radiation.

Kennedy Sukarno In Accord On Malaysia Crisis

Atty Gen Robert F Kennedy and Indonesian President Sukarno reached agreement that the Malaysia crisis should be resolved by consultation. The first diplomatic mission for President Johnson included a 90 minute, cordial talks in Tokyo with a second round slated for Saturday.

New Law Expands Township Supervisors Power to Halt Flooding

Lawrence County township supervisors voiced concerns over a state law signed by Gov. Scranton last year. Milton W. Parcel Post Rates Hike Approved by ICC

The Interstate Commerce Commission approved Parcel Post rate increases averaging 13.1 percent, raising annual revenue by about 75.4 million dollars and catalog mailing rates by about 2.3 million. Local two pound parcels rise 21 percent while 70 pound local deliveries see no increase.
