Dr Renwick Patterson executive of the National Reform Assn told nearly 200 Lawrence County rotary and WCTU members yesterday that alcoholism is not a disease. He argued against the view and urged stronger moral reform.
New Castle Council of Churches voted unanimously to back the YM YWCA building campaign at First Methodist Church. The vote of confidence to campaign leaders followed a dinner and business session led by James Trusel. Dr. Patterson spoke at a WCTU Victory Day Luncheon on alcohol as a disease and the need for total abstinence to curb highway carnage.

The State Supreme Court yesterday affirmed a Lawrence County Court decision to abolish the Chewton Independent School District and merge it into Wayne Two. New Castle attorney Thomas V. Mansell argued the lower court lacked authority to dissolve the district and place it back, while Chewton’s tax payers favored abolishment with Alfred V. Papa representing them.
Navy rescuers searched the Cooper River banks for six men missing and presumed dead after a flash fire at a Charleston Navy pier. The blaze, sparked by a welding torch, charred a 250 yard pier as a 15 to 20 knot breeze fanned flames and left six injured.
