The Belle vanished a week ago after sending distress signals 100 miles east of the Massachusetts coast. Storms and fog forced a three day pause in the operation.

Aboard the U S 5 mount Olympus in Antarctica Jan 17 five year old Little America camp site from Byrd's south pole expedition was rediscovered by Rear Admiral Richard H Cruzen. The site was spotted from air while seeking new camp and airstrip sites near Discovery Inlet and Bay of Whales as ships prepared for two months of scientific studies and plane landings from the Carrier Philippine Sea.
In Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania two Glen Alden Coal Co laborers were killed by a rock fall at the Buttonwood mine. John Babrak 41 of Wilkes-Barre and Frank Broelski 46 of Hanover township died after six hours of rescue efforts.
Three people were hurt when a car driven by Norman Mayer, 16, collided with a Rieck-McJunkin Dairy truck on the New Castle Ellwood City road. Mrs Eleanor Shaffer, 34, suffered a severe forehead laceration and possible skull fracture. Mayer and John George, 308 Friendship street, had minor injuries. The crash occurred at 2 15 p m Thursday en route to Ellwood City to view Shirley Fleeger's body from a fatally injured crash last Saturday. Shaffer is related to Cecil Ray Shaffer who died in that collision.
New York January 17 Coast Guard headquarters reports a collision off the Grand River and the Cape Edmont about 240 miles southeast of New Orleans. Both ships large damage but making way to New Orleans under their own power. The Grand River 10172 ton Providence Rhode Island to Lake Charles owned by Bernath Lemboke Co. Cape Edmont 6711 ton New Orleans to Curacao Venezuela buckled plates and water in hold No 4. Both vessels head to New Orleans at 14 knots awaiting afternoon arrival.
The government authorized sugar price increases that will raise the retail cost by about one cent for a five pound package. The Office of Temporary Controls set maximum rises of 18.5 cents per hundred pounds for raw cane sugar and 20 cents per hundred pounds for refined sugar, effective at midnight. Stores will apply the higher prices as shipments under the new rates arrive and follow provisions of the Cuban sugar buying agreement for 1946 and 1947 crops.

A Southern Pacific Owl train derailed after a broken rail 15 miles north of Bakersfield. Police investigated widespread window damage across about 25 downtown shops in Sharon. Merchants division of the Chamber of Commerce posted a $30 reward for those responsible.

In Atlanta on January 17 Ellis Arnall announced a temporary move of his governor’s office to the Candler Building as Herman Talmadge’s forces seized the Capitol desk. Two armed men held up the Albert M. Higley Construction payroll office in Cleveland seizing 7000 dollars in cash. An accomplice drove the getaway car as one bandit covered paymaster Nathan Hals with a shotgun and the other with a revolver. The temporary pay office was set up during construction on a Sears Rosbuck store addition on Cleveland's west side.
