Dr Norris travels to Jackson to lead a group in YMCA activities. The report notes his role guiding local YMCA efforts and coordinating events with community members.
The Y M C A membership drive opened with enthusiastic turnout as cars crossed the line in the six days race. Dr E P Norris led his division with twenty five new members and B F Butler's group totaled seventy on day one. State Secretary Hockenbury praised uniform success and predicted new records for the campaign.
City councilmen met with New Castle Electric representatives on Friday to discuss a domestic rate contract. The council seeks a flat 5 cents per kilowatt hour while the company has offered 5 3-4 cents or 6 cents with 6 percent off for prompt payment, no agreement yet.
Deputy Sheriff Whaley escorted Sam Frank Bennie Gordon and Ann White to the workhouse this morning. They had been sentenced a few days earlier on liquor selling charges.
Mrs Findley Brandon aged 7 of 100 Milton Street and Mrs J M Sullivan aged 71 of 10 East Cherry Street are listed in a death record. John R McVey of Lowellville appears in the item.
Nineteen liquor license applications were filed this morning with bonds of 2000 dollars. Applications include one brewery, five wholesale and thirteen retail licenses from several hotels and businesses in the city, Ellwood City, and Wampum. A supplemental petition by Harry D. Smith for the Leroy hotel listed 136 names, mostly foreigners. The dry forces plan campaigns and remonstrances as the licensing battle shapes up.
Hugh Daugherty of South Jefferson Street, a No 2 furnace employee at the Carnegie steel plant, was badly burned about the face and hands when metal exploded at his station. He was taken to Shenango Valley hospital and is reported to be resting easier.
One man was killed and two seriously injured when gas exploded in a kiln at the Mars brick yard causing collapse. A fourth man escaped. Police say the men were tramps who had crawled into the kiln to sleep.
City councilmen confront a nine month appropriation cycle due to the Clark act shifting the fiscal year to January. March 1914 tax levy will cover a full year, while expenditures are budgeted for nine months from April 1914 to January 1915. Council aims to reduce property taxes if possible alongside the nine month budget plan.
Mrs. A. C. Clark was released on $500 bail before Alderman Gross on a disorderly house charge. The arrest stems from confessions by two Butter girls. Attorney Thomas W. Dickey will defend her when the case proceeds in court.
J. J. W. Morrow of this city, a horse fancier, purchased Lawrence McGregor, a chestnut stallion secured in Kentucky. The horse has a good record and a complete list of registered sires and dams. Morrow will race the horse next season and also keep him at stud.
Terrific forest fires rage near Ridge Crest on Mount Mitchell slopes. Dozens of homes and the Y M C A summer camp at Black Mountain lie in the flame path. Firefighters are being reinforced hourly from surrounding territory to combat the blaze.
New Castle police announce a $500 reward for the arrest of Henry Rokowski in connection with the December 28 shooting deaths of Marvin Windt and two others in Mifflin township Allegheny county.
A single robber held up a Western and Atlantic train near Vinings on January 17, taking about $300 from 20 passengers. Deputy Sheriff C. O. Heard, a passenger, fired. the bandit fled toward Bolton where James Nolan was arrested hours later and denied involvement.
Four people were burned to death and two fatally hurt in an early morning Brockton apartment house fire. Six others were seriously injured as the fire rose from the dumb waiter, trapping residents before they could escape. The dead include Mrs. Mary J. Monahan and W. B. Monahan. fatally hurt were William A. Reno and William Bonner. an unidentified man also died.
Mrs. Elizabeth Fullerton sues the Mahoning and Shenango Railway and Light Co for 25000 damages over her husband’s death at Linville crossing. Judge Porter hears the case. defense motion for compulsory non-suit was refused after plaintiff testimony. Proceedings continue.
This morning the health department logged two cases Celia Speer at 501 Friendship Street with diphtheria and Eugene Nolte at 808 West North Street with pneumonia.
Heavy Guns on outlaw Edward Beardsley's Summerdale house as National Guard and deputies tighten siege near Mayville New York. Sheriff plans bombardment if surrender does not come. brothers Charles and Carl Beardsley rotate talks while Beardsley fires on deputies and refuses to yield.
County Superintendent W Lee Gilmore will address a mass meeting of Plaingrove township citizens on Friday January 23 about centralizing the schools. The town plans to issue $8 000 in bonds for a new school house to replace six nearby schools and shuttle pupils to the centralized building.
County commissioners urge townships to file petitions for state aid roads before March 1. If petitions were filed last year but not acted on they must be filed again this year to receive consideration.
A dry publicity committee presents figures on Lawrence County showing fewer arrests and shifts in crime during license and no license periods. It cites reductions in violence and other crimes, plus juror payments across 1908 to 1910, with a note that data derives from city and county records and can be verified.

No mail was delivered all week at Portersville and rural routes due to deep snow drifts. Roads were nearly impassable and many residents could not reach the city for three days.
Mrs Maud Gentry wife of Rev John Gentry near Stratford New Jersey tells of hypnotic influence that made her forget her husband and home and elope with William Fisher. Fisher was arrested as a fugitive, Gentry seeks to win back his wife while Fisher is kept away.
The county bill of 515.16 to the city was returned this morning. After deducting city claims, 444.16 was ordered paid. City Controller Hughes argued settling separately would cost more due to commissions. Officials planned to discuss the matter with the county commissioners.
Frank L. Lennox sold his property on Morehead avenue in South New Castle borough and bought the McGaffree property on Huron avenue. He plans to move his family to the new home next week.
