An all clear was sounded after a string of burning derailed railroad tankers caused evacuations in Springville Alabama. Lawrence C Falk reports a tense scene with explosions prompting a townwide halt and later return to normal.
Shenango Township firefighters battled a blaze at the American Metallurgical Products Co. plant destroying about 300 empty packaging containers for carbo sil in a 20 by 80 foot storage room. No damage estimate given. Captain Dowdell noted no imminent explosion danger from nearby magnesium.
The United States and North Vietnam reached full procedural agreement to open expanded talks with Viet Cong and Saigon representatives at the Hotel Majestic. The session starts Saturday at 10 30 a m with Nguyen Xuan Phong and Vance to speak first for the non Communist side and Lau and Nguyen Thi Binh for the Viet Cong.
Lodge 2178 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers will meet at Benjamin Franklin Junior High at 9 a.m. Saturday to vote on the company’s latest proposals. Lodge president Tully Morelli urged all members to attend. Doors open at 8 a.m. The lodge has been on strike at Mesta Machine Co. for three and a half months.
The state Justice Department opened an inquiry into a $1,250 donation claimed to guarantee highway department work. District Attorney Fox ordered county detective Smith to lead, seeking cooperation from the state AG after Charles Ferrer alleged the payment to Arnold Satz for winter work. Satz denies a work promise, saying the money covered Ferrer’s prior stone crushing and equipment rental. Two DOJ investigators arrived to probe contractor practices and the local highways garage.
Two manned Soviet Soyuz vessels linked in space for four hours then separated, the first such maneuver. Cosmonauts conducted a retrieval walk and prepared for possible on orbit crew swaps as part of a planned landing next day.
United Press International reports Israeli and Jordanian forces clashed along the Jordan River ceasefire line in Beisan Valley near Maoz Hayim. Israeli fire and air strikes were claimed, with one Israeli half track destroyed and no Jordanian casualties, though enemy casualties were suspected.
The New Castle Area Education Association was officially named the bargaining agent by the city school board. The board heard a three part salary proposal and noted anticipated changes under pending Harrisburg laws on teacher negotiation and grievance procedures. Administrators withdrew from the NCAEA after the group limited their representation.
President Johnson told Congress the nation faces a highly prosperous 1969 but must punch a hole in the price wage balloon. He backed voluntary restraints from labor and business, warned against price and wage controls, and urged extended tax measures to balance $195.3 billion in proposed spending. He also proposed tying the Federal Reserve chair term to presidential terms.
