Harrisburg AP The 1961 General Assembly reconvenes to hear Gov Lawrence present the first annual budget and potential tax changes. A two cent gas tax hike is under discussion to raise about 70 million yearly for highways. The day includes committee appointments and constitutional amendments.
George Lincoln Rockwell, 42, leader of the American Nazi party, attempted to picket a film about the founding of Israel in Boston. A crowd of about 2,000, including World War II camp survivors, forced him from the Saxon Theater but police intervened to prevent violence as Rockwell and three lieutenants were escorted away. Rockwell registered at the Hotel Touraine under an alias after arriving from Washington, D.C.
