A fatal blaze on the South Side leaves five children dead and another severely injured as a door obstruction blocks a mother’s rescue attempt. The fire is reported as the city’s deadliest. The incident underscores questions about safety in older housing.
Alfred H. Owens was re-elected president of the Greater New Castle Association. New officers include J. Fred T. Nicolson as second vice president, with Victor J. Andrew and Kenneth V. Funkhouser in other leadership roles. Richard E. Two would be kidnappers Bailey and Scalla were killed by Beverly Hills police after their attempt to abduct Leonard Firestone. The pair, wearing disguises, opened fire as detectives closed in. one died at scene, the other later in hospital. A policewoman had been staking out the Firestone residence. In the same fire tragedy five children died in a city fire. victims named Norman Mayer and his children.
Mrs Helen Leonard chased a bank robber from Mellon National Bank in Ross Township after he fled in a car with her purchases in hand. The suspect Fitzpatrick, 28, of Osceola Mills Pa, was later captured as bystanders watched. Leonard stopped him by yelling and pointing police were alerted.
Freshman state Senator Robert P. Casey of Lackawanna County is pursuing the Democratic nomination for governor. Endorsements came from northeastern county chairs and State Senator Lyle G. Hall as he builds support for the statewide ticket.
Richard C. Gilmartin, 65, of Pittsburgh, was hired as director for the $548,847 mass transit pilot in New Castle. He starts Feb. 1 and will earn 12000 annually. The project runs three years. five compact buses costing 11016 each will be purchased rather than leased. The group will tour Carpenter Bus Co. in Mitchel today to finalize delivery plans, hosted by Cottrell Bus Sales’ Edward Hansen.
President Johnson condemns a 15 percent wage settlement for transit workers as potentially inflationary and not in the national interest. Treasury adviser Ackley says the deal contrasts with unions' restraint. New York Mayor Lindsay calls it best for workers and city, while critics cheer anti inflation stance.
