Cincinnati engineers H. B. Lammers and A. L. Kiewit began a week long survey of smoke in New Castle to assess firing methods and propose abatement. They will hold two instructional meetings Tuesday and Thursday at the high school for boiler operators and other firing personnel.

Britain confirms the loss of its only four engine jet capable of carrying atomic bombs after a test flight crash near Christchurch Hampshire. An accidental engine bay fire caused the fatal crash three minutes after takeoff killing one crewman while four parachuted to safety. No design changes will be made to future atom bombers of this type.
Death claims Harvey R. Mollenkopf 51 of North Beaver township and Joseph Tomasello 72 of 660 East ee, ee. Also listed are Cora Rodgers Tucker 97 of 206 Milton street and Joseph Ascarella 1 of South Mill street.
In Munsan on January 14 the Communists accused the United Nations negotiators of lying. The two subcommittees on airfield construction and prisoner exchange failed to break a four way deadlock but agreed to reconvene at 11 am Tuesday. Rear Admiral R. E. Libby led the UN push for acceptance of an Allied plan as tempers flared.
Two heavily armed men were arrested in Valencia on Sunday just before U S Ambassador Stanton Griffis and a top American admiral passed a balcony filled with spectators in an event reported by the London Daily Express.
President Truman presses on with a Vatican ambassador bid despite Senate opposition after Gen. Mark W. Clark asks withdrawal. Secretary Short announced Clark’s name would not be resubmitted and a new nomination may come later. Clark, at Fort Monroe, cited controversial issues and requested withdrawal. Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Connally had opposed the nomination.
An interim report says a Northeast Airlines twin-engine plane from Boston to New York crash landed in the East River near LaGuardia. Rescue crews saved 31 of 36 aboard. officials fear two may have gone down. The crew says all on board were rescued. The private tug Bill Endter assisted in the operations.
Fenton Michigan January 14 All seven occupants of a car were killed when it raced a Grand Trunk passenger train to a crossing. The locomotive smashed the auto broadside dragging it 120 feet down the tracks and scattering the seven bodies along the right of way. The car sped up as it approached the crossing, the train engineer testified.
Driver Mr. Ranucci uninjured when ashes from a lighted cigarette ignited his shirt and caused loss of control on East Washington street at 7 30. His 1941 Chevrolet sedan struck a utility pole near 1712 East Washington and overturned briefly before a wrecker removed the car. Ranucci, who lives at 721 Arlington avenue, was en route to work at the National Radiator Co. Police and power company officials responded.
Moscow and Peiping extend a propaganda push toward Japan as occupation authorities move to curb the Communist party. Top leaders Kyuichi Tokuda and Sanzo Nozaka have been fugitives since 1950, with Akahata suspended and leaders purged. The effort appears aimed at complicating U S access to Japan for Korea operations.
Vice Admiral John H. Cassady states the navy has carrier based aircraft capable of delivering a five ton A bomb to a target 770 miles distant and returning, operating 500 miles from shore. He says Arctic operations are feasible and notes four new fighters surpass the MIG 15 in performance, though UN forces lack air superiority in Korea due to numbers.
The Walmer lifeboat saved the crew and captain of the 4,186 ton French steamer Agens after it ran aground on the Goodwin Sands along England's gale battered southeast coast. The grounding occurred last night with the vessel breaking up under rough seas.

The General Accounting Office will investigate government crop storage arrangements after a preliminary Texas audit showed shortages exceeding three million dollars in deals between private warehousemen and the Commodity Credit Corporation. Comptroller General Lindsay Warren announced the probe, noting about 15,000 similar contracts nationwide.
Harrisburg opens the annual State Farm Show promising the largest 36th edition. Gov. John S.
