The Pittsburgh steel district sees mills reopening after a one week strike pause. U S Steel and Jones & Laughlin report near full capacity while Youngstown and Johnstown mills also resume schedules as optimism grows for a wage agreement before midweek.
After two weeks of mild temps the return of cold weather and strong winds left residents shivering. Four county traffic fatalities this year worry officials about surpassing prior yearly records if drivers and pedestrians don't improve safety. A new firehouse in Neshannock Township nears roof completion. A large mass meeting drew autos around North Hill and cathedral area. Downtown shoppers faced bewildering sale signs as a pedestrian ripped ads from one storefront and moved them to another store.
Weather statistics for the 24 hour periods ending 9 a.m. today and 9 a.m. Sunday show high and low temperatures of 23 and 14 with trace snow, and 40 and 22 with trace snow. River stage 7.3 feet reported.
President Truman and top advisers expect a settlement of the steel wage dispute before the January 20 strike deadline. After a week reprieve, steel production resumes gradually as furnaces are banked and workers return, with officials noting it will take days to return to full production.

New York enters the sixth day of a transit strike as 7,000 Western Union telegraph workers walk out over wage demands. CIO American Communications Association leader Joseph P. Selly says the walkout will persist until gains are won, while company officials claim supervisory staff handle normal Sunday volume and weekday volume is severely down.
Police sought clues in the New Jersey case of 77 year old widow Mrs Lillian Hinkle and 53 year old farmworker Thomas Davis found beaten to death. A hammer lay in the kitchen and both victims showed about a dozen blows. Davis' body was found in an adjoining barnyard.
Chicago police pressed a new sweep for a neighbor of Suzanne Degnan as a likely suspect in the kidnap murder. A man with a prior morals offense arrest was identified by a landlady for frequent trips to his apartment the night of the crime. Detectives checked 24 apartments with unobstructed Degnan window views while three men held on surveillance awaited evidence.
Allied prosecutors disclosed that Adolf Hitler ordered machine-gunning survivors of torpedoed ships to curb the U S Merchant Marine. Col Harry Fillimore said Japanese ambassador Oshima concurred in the 1942 order to speed elimination of trained sailors.
President Truman asks Congress for a six billion dollar reduction in war funding. The proposal would repeal five and a half billion dollars in appropriations plus four hundred twenty million in contract authorizations. The cuts add to more than fifty billion already approved and affect many aspects of the wartime program.
Tokyo reports Gen Douglas MacArthur approved five cabinet replacements after purge directives. Investiture at the Imperial Palace with Emperor Hirohito. Premier Shidehara ill with pneumonia may return within a week. The new ministers include Mitsuchi Abe Soejima Ishiguro Narahashi. MacArthur authorized elections after March 15 for the House of Representatives.
London dispatch says the UN general assembly will open with a six power resolution on atomic energy control led by James Byrnes. The debate will include A Y Vishinsky and 51 nations weighing peaceful information exchange and inspections to ban atomic weapons while ensuring compliance.
In Tionesta Pennsylvania on January 14 two sisters Helen Rudolph 14 and Elsie Rudolph 12 died when trapped on the second floor as a house burned. Their sister Joy Tucker was injured leaping from a second floor window and was hospitalized. Cause of the blaze was not determined.
Congress reconvenes after a three week recess amid labor unrest and GI protests over demobilization delays. Gen Dwight Eisenhower and Admiral Chester Nimitz will outline military perspectives on service overseas deployment while Congress awaits Truman's state of the union and budget message.
In New York on January 14 members of the Association of Communications Equipment Engineers were ordered back to work as long distance telephone service neared normal. The ACEW had struck following a 30 day delay by its parent federation the National Federation of Telephone Workers, and lines were reopened after members reported by 1 p.m. EST. Long distance operators had been blocked by picket lines nationwide before the withdrawal.
Pittsburgh workers began withdrawing picket lines from the Bell Telephone 32 exchanges today in response to a request by the National Federation of Telephone Workers. About 500 accounting and toll operators entered the building as Clarence Gorman, president of the Pittsburgh An Association of Communications Equipment Workers, said the strike would continue without pickets.
Ohio Bell telephone workers idle since Friday began returning to their jobs shortly before 9 a m in Cleveland as picket lines were removed from in front of telephone buildings.
Large group of Lawrence County graduates attended a Sunday evening Catholic service at St Josephs Church sponsored by the Lawrence County Priest Forum. Fr Francis M McCarter delivered the sermon on Who Art Thou and urged a noble life, with Benediction by Fr William M Pisarcik.
Twenty two thousand CIO United Electrical Workers in western Pennsylvania were ordered to strike against Westinghouse Electric and General Electric. Neil Brent, Washington union rep, said talks failed to avert a shutdown. Pickets at Westinghouse plants in East Pittsburgh Lawrenceville and Homewood start at 7 am with 24 hour picketing and fines for nonparticipants.
Pittsburgh police seek identity of woman aged about 35 to 40 found dead on B and O tracks after being struck by a train. Police reported the incident occurred yesterday in Pittsburgh.
Speaking on Things of God R G LeTourneau told 3200 at the Cathedral auditorium New Castle that God needs Christian business men as well as pastors and missionaries. He recounted his life from a Christian home to choosing industry after prayer and a pastor’s words.
Albert Manuel of Chester, missing since November 29 in Lycoming County mountains, is found dead from natural causes. A search party from the Delaware County Field and Stream club and state foresters located his body in barren lands near Cedar Run after five weeks of intensive searching. The party was led by Philip A. McLaughlin, who was with Manuel on the hunting trip.
