Roy Hinkson 32, of 124 North Crawford avenue, is in Jameson Memorial hospital in serious condition after a car driven by Ben Prosser skidded on ice and struck a pole at the foot of West State street hill. Prosser and Kennedy suffered minor injuries. Hinkson sustained head injuries, a fractured collar bone, and possible internal injuries.
Reports from Hankov say Outer Mongolian troops attacked pro Japanese Inner Mongolian forces. The invaders occupied Pailingmiao, a religious center in Northern Suiyan, within the area claimed by the new Inner Mongolian Republic established by Japan.

The German government via Ambassador Hans Dieckhoff lodged a strong verbal protest with the United States over criticism by former Ambassador William E. Dodd in New York. Secretary Cordell Hull reminded Germany that the United States stands for free speech and did not retract Dodd’s remarks.

In Salem Massachusetts a double divorce case includes an alleged “swap ping” of wives. Raymond S. Lee testified a friendly arrangement existed with Calvin M. Watson. Mrs. Lee denied the claim calling the testimony a pack of lies while Watson sues his wife Estelle Watson. Mrs. Lee said Estelle Watson visited their home often and Watson visited only occasionally.
James Leroy Bassett 34 of Lyons New York confessed to Erie police he murdered his father 72 at a home near Auburn last Tuesday. He said he shot him after a demand for money to visit his estranged wife in Michigan and then spread a gas line and set the shack on fire. Bassett hitchhiked to Erie arriving the night before and gave his statement to Police Chief George Christoph. He had worked as a chauffeur at Garlic farm near Auburn.
Lawrence County educators convene the 35th annual convention at the Second U P church. The afternoon business session will name officers who will form a county school board from among association leaders.
Harrisburg reports simultaneous testing in 18 cities for 15,000 applicants seeking public assistance jobs tomorrow. Positions include research and statistics, supervisory, and higher clerical classes. Among the applicants are three blind persons.
In a 1938 report, Congress is said to have approved nearly $5 million in secret funds for high officials including President Roosevelt, cabinet members, and J Edgar Hoover. The funds require no detailed accounting and may cover diverse uses from recreation to emergency needs. Secretary Hull receives the largest share to fund officials at international conferences.
Harrisburg authorities initiated an inquiry into the death of Daniel La Maure, 17, an inmate at the State Industrial School in Huntingdon. Governor Earle directed the motor police commissioner to determine if the death resulted from a heart attack or tear gas exposure.
Pennsylvania motor police were ordered to speed up cases by bringing violators directly before a justice of the peace for hearings. Commissioner Percy W. Foote announced exceptions only when routine information filing would cause considerable inconvenience to motorist or officer.
Thomas B. Hamilton of Bellefonte Pennsylvania, a Civil War veteran and reputed Centre County’s oldest resident, turned 100 today. The Bellefonte native enlisted in the Union Army four days after the war began and later outlived a life insurance policy.
Jacob F. Genkinger announced plans to erect a one story brick and tile Streamline groceries building at 19 South Mercer Street to replace the former Capitol Theater site. Construction by Zehner Brothers is set to begin within a week, with completion expected by March 1 and a customer parking area to be prepared along the 48 by 160 foot building.

Fire destroyed a three story brick and frame building in Mechanicsburg last night. Loss was estimated at 36000 dollars. Fourteen families were forced to flee the blaze as charred walls remained today in the wake of the disaster.
County commissioners refilled most vacant positions after dismissing temporary workers. Two dismissed employees were restored, two given temporary roles, and others reinstated in the registration and welfare offices. Changes take effect Monday January 17.
Pennsylvania motor police issued two warnings to autoists. The first said the inspection period ends January 31. The second stated that 1937 license plates cannot be operated after midnight January 15. Violations will bring arrest.
Chinese reports from Hankow claim the recapture of Tsining in Shantung by Chiang Kai-Shek forces. The front reports say the left flank has been secured and Chinese advance reaches ten miles beyond Tsaining.

Harrisburg January 14 Receipts from the malt beverage tax for 1937 totaled 7 522 003 39 as compared to 7 287 425 32 in the prior year Secretary of Revenue J Griffith Boardman announced today The tax is levied at 1 24 per barrel.
