In Saigon a creeping barrage by American artillery against Viet Cong positions in the Iron Triangle accidentally struck a company of the 1st Infantry Division. Eight soldiers were killed and 34 wounded as the operation marked a large new phase in the war, including establishing the first permanent U.S. camp in the Mekong Delta.
Donald R. Nicolson, president of Peoples Realty Co., was elected president of the Greater New Castle Association. He succeeds Alfred H. Owens of Citizens National Bank, who becomes first vice president, with other officers including Richard E. Whittaker and Charles Rhodes. Sixteen rounds of high explosives hit a company advancing in Operation Cedar Falls, causing casualties. the operation has killed or captured over 400 Communists.
