Probe Crash Of Airliner That Killed 18 In Pre-dawn Storm
A Detroit to Miami Eastern Airlines flight crashed into Blue Ridge woods near Galax Virginia during a pre dawn rainstorm. Eighteen perished with one survivor William Elias Kevys. Victims included crew Captain H M Haskew J Canepa and Mary McDermott and passengers listed. Rickenbacker said the craft was 66 miles off course en route to Winston Salem. The crash remains under federal investigation.

March of Dimes Polio Campaign Opens Wednesday
Lawrence county chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis will start its March of Dimes drive Wednesday January 15 to raise funds for poliomyelitis treatment and care. Under chairman William Hanna and county chair Joan Hodge the two week effort will place tin cans in public buildings and hold a tag day on January 25 in theaters. The group notes polio fight is costly, with equipment hospital care and nursing needs. In 1946 the chapter spent 2834.50 to treat eight cases locally and has over 500 dollars worth of equipment at Jameson hospital with trained nurses available. Continued on Page Two.
