Tax dispute over inheritance relief slows amid bills proposed by the House and Senate. President Coolidge signals cautious cuts while party leaders argue over the 20 000 to 100 000 income range and the overall 230 000 000 reduction.
Five hundred members of the Junior Order United American Mechanics gathered in K of P hall in New Castle and heard national officers extol the order. Joseph Rice chaired. speakers included Thomas A. Walters James L. Wilmuth Joseph L. Tunnison and William Murphy. The meeting emphasized Americanism and the order’s work for orphans.
A monarchist and nationalist manifesto signed by Prince Oscar and several generals appeals to Germans to banish Marxism and the Dawes plan as an instrument ruinous to industry. It follows President Hindenburg's ultimatum and hints at a possible dictatorship amid a fractured government. The Lokal Anzeiger denounces the Dawes plan as failed after one year. The Communist party responds to the ultra right move.
In Ferriday Louisiana a fire swept a block of business buildings destroying a block and burying persons in the ruins. Authorities say several people were seriously burned and two or more may have died as the blaze continued to burn past noon. Damage was estimated at about $100000 and recovery efforts were underway led by city alderman M M Perkins.
Fire at Monongahela area near Manowa destroys a garage and a frame dwelling and damages a business place with an estimated loss of 30000. Indeterminate origin in the Banco garage. Firemen fought five hours with no water until wind shifted saved much of the village. Two autos in the garage were burned.
Sheriff H M Reynolds and deputy Louie Hoon pursued Nick Phillips a Roumanian from Knox Step near Ellwood City. Phillips bolted into a cellar and creek chase led to capture two miles from his home. he was jailed at the county jail.
The Ohio Supreme Court ruled that home manufacture of wine is illegal. It prohibited an Ohio resident from producing wine at home from grapes grown on the premises for use solely by household members.
New York strike talks ended and the Pennsylvania Coal Company miners committee voted to call out all maintenance men. Resolutions were sent to union leaders as similar action had been taken by District No. 1 committees.
A small earthquake rattled Santa Barbara California on January 12 lasting about three seconds with no damage reported.
Washington January 12 indicates a tense fight over seating Senator Designate Gerald P Nye North Dakota. Polls reveal mixed signals with Republican friendly poll showing 45 43 for Nye and seven undecided while Democratic and International News polls oppose seating by margins of 47 43 and 43 38 respectively.
Columbus, Jan 12 Acting President Rightmire and university trustees opened the initial public hearing into alleged violations of dry laws by OSU instructors and students. The probe follows the dismissal of Dabney Horton on liquor charges and will next consider rumors of a professor speaking on communism in Chicago and students accusing professors of drinking liquor.
Pittsburgh report says 48000 gallons of alcohol seized in railroad yards last November were intended for violation of Federal laws. Prohibition director F C Baird declared this in a statement filed in Federal court in response to Republic Chemical Co. petition to recover the liquor claiming it was denatured and illegally seized.
The executive committee for a new city hotel met at the Elks club at noon to review stock sale plans led by F. E. Mayer of the Hockenberry System. O. P. Brown was elected general sales manager as stock sales will begin after initial subscriptions by committee members. The American Hotels company holds a 30 year management contract for the project. The next meeting is Friday January 15 at noon in the Elks club.
Three small cities arise near the Cascade summit as work begins on the Great Northern railway eight mile tunnel project valued at 8 606 600 dollars. About 1500 workers prepare camps for 350 to 400 men each to work three years eliminating six miles of snow sheds and several curves along the route.
Charles Garland, Massachusetts millionaire and founder of April farm near Allentown, returns for a January 28 hearing on statutory charges tied to a three month old baby’s birth and death. Bail posted, a colony of women disappeared leaving one resident, Dorris Benson, as authorities arrive with sheriff and detectives. Darrow later named to defend Garland.
James Benjamin Patterson aged 33 of New Galilee dies at Providence hospital New Brighton Pa from chest injuries after his car was struck by a Pittsburgh Lisbon freight train at a crossing near New Galilee. His companion was hurt but expected to recover. Patterson leaves parents W J and Mrs W J Patterson wife Norma Patterson two sons William Gray and Robert Dean and sister Mrs George Greer. Funeral Thursday at 2 pm from parental home New Galilee with Dr Savage officiating. Interment White Cemetery.
Cecelia M. Frazier of Pittsburgh sues W. D. Hays of Fenelton for 10000 in a suit filed in Butler alleging reckless passing on the Butler Slip Rock road led to a southbound car being forced off the highway, overturning, and causing the death of H. G. Frazier after removal to Butler Memorial Hospital.
John Ciccone was arrested yesterday on a process and remains jailed in the county facility. Bail has not been set and a hearing date has not been established.
James B. Patterson aged 33 died in New Galileo Pennsylvania. Funeral details and services are pending as the family requests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers.

Helle and C. F. Ball inspected six school houses and noted one room buildings are in fair condition.
