Troopers Return Home Amid Texan Sojourn and Bread Shortage

Troopers of a Pennsylvania cavalry regiment are marooned hours in Dallas and endure a slow return by train. Engine breakdowns force a weary trek, horses are fed in the dark, and bread runs out prompting purchases in Fort Worth. The unit, en route to Memphis via Texas and Pacific, passes Big Springs and reflects on the journey as they head toward God’s country.

Springfield Ike Targets Church Attendance Amid Police Scrutiny

Springfield Ike, a Black man known for soapbox stunts, was once again detained after a police confrontation. He claimed to have licked all the best men, said he was promised church attendance for release, and alleged police misconduct. The mayor and police chief dismissed his accusations as he described prior arrests and odd bribe-like incidents.

City Fire Service Upgrades Urged By National Board Engineer

J H Howland of the National Board of Underwriters visited the city and urged expanding paid firemen to 12 15 more, full authorization for departments, and a drill tower. He backed automatic sprinklers at the water works pump, higher main capacity to the mercantile district, 100 additional downtown hydrants, a building code and inspector. He warned the city has grown beyond village limits and needs rapid modernization. He praised the firemen at the Power block blaze but said a quick elevating ladder is needed. he will remain for several days for further study.
