Miss Betty Arlene Rice twenty one year old of Grove City died at Mercer Cottage hospital from automobile injuries suffered on the Mercer Sharon road at the western edge of Mercer. The driver Lawrence Harvey Boller twenty age twenty from Slippery Rock is hospitalized with chest injuries not believed serious. Boller had borrowed the car to take his uncle to a doctor's office and was on leave from the Navy.
Chotaro Furushima, ex commandant of a Japanese prison camp, was found guilty of atrocities and sentenced to life in prison. He was held responsible for starving Private James S. Mann of Los Angeles and mistreating Private Leroy Priest of Charlotte, North Carolina, among other war crimes. Priest suffered frost bite resulting in the loss of nine toes after solitary confinement.

Washington reports a three member wage board urged General Motors and the CIO Auto Workers to settle the 51 day strike with a 17 percent wage rise for about 200000 workers. The union sought 30 percent, GM offered 10 percent, and the panel recommended a 190 cent hourly increase. The decision awaits union action in Detroit with final word by the national GM conference.
