Fire alarms from boxes 41 and 47 brought Fourth Ward and Central firemen who faced heavy access problems. Little furniture was saved and damage is estimated at 400 to 500 dollars with origin undetermined.
City patrol officers have been reassigned to new beats within the past few days. Changes occur every two to four weeks to ensure no officer remains on the same beat for many weeks.
Edith Smith a Wheaton schoolteacher dies after refusing Sylvester Adams monthly. Adams shot her then killed himself in the schoolhouse. A note from Miss Smith and Adams’s reply were found, revealing a doomed courtship and a wife left behind.

He invoked quotes and anecdotes to evade questions until Representative Gardner forced clear answers and Beall pressed for key testimony on price fixing and regulation. In West Hammond Indiana Charles Buluois 23 spanked his 16 year old wife with a strap. Judge Frank Green sentenced him to 100 days in jail saying he had no right to beat his wife. The wife told him he got what he deserved as they left the court.
Official census returns show France’s population at 39,601,509, up from 39,252,245 in 1906. The data indicate migration from rural areas to cities with Paris housing 2,888,110 residents. Over forty years France’s population has risen by about 3.5 million.
United Press reports on January 11 in Manila that on the island of Jolo an ambush by Moros failed as American troops surprised them. Thirty Moros were killed, Lieut. McGee of the Second Cavalry was badly wounded, and three troopers were slightly injured as the Moros were attacked by a scouting party. The engagement is expected to end resistance to American rule on the island.
The ninth annual convention of the Lawrence county school directors will meet Friday and Saturday at the courthouse. Morning sessions feature several noted speakers and the program includes Friday afternoon and two Saturday sessions, closing in the afternoon.
The will dispute involving George L Patterson against Madame Katherine Tingley is active in San Diego California. Photographs feature Patterson and Tingley along with lawyers and children as Los Angeles Times and San Diego Union report sensational trial episodes. Boston January 11. Richeson’s counsel plan to file a writ of error with the state Supreme Court to reopen the case. They argue Richeson’s mental condition left him unable to understand the guilty plea and death sentence. If sustained, the plea and sentence could be set aside unless the executive council votes to commute.
Two hundred men worked all night to dynamite a massive ice jam below the Fox river water power dam and railroad bridges. The effort alleviated the flood, allowing streetcar traffic and electric lighting to resume. The city expects large damage and continued effort to prevent a repeat jam during cold weather.
Early morning blaze at the Oakdale hotel in Austin suburban Chicago destroyed four buildings. Twenty guests were evacuated with some rescued from third story windows as frozen pipes slowed efforts. Loss pegged at $60,000.
Akron O Jan 11 Cuyahoga Falls will stay wet after a local option vote yesterday. With 963 ballots cast 525 favored wet and 438 dry the wets lead by 7 votes.
Governor Judson Harmon of Ohio opened his western bid for the Democratic presidential nomination at a LaSalle Hotel luncheon. He touted Ohio reforms including universal taxation and urged national adoption of the Ohio program, while Illinois factionalism and local leaders observed a strong Harmon following.
The fire and finance committees of the city councils will meet at the city clerk's office on Friday evening.
Rescue efforts at a Coulter farm coal mine failed as Frank Coulter and James McChesney were killed when the roof collapsed. Rescuers labored to reach the bodies, planning a new shaft and explosives to remove tons of rock blocking access.

H L Alspaugh a special policeman for Carnegie Steel filed the charge after Tony Cook, a former employee, caused a disturbance when asked for his number. Cook was jailed to await a hearing.
