Virginia approves plan to fund segregated schools

Virginia voters backed a pro segregation referendum by a two to one margin authorizing the General Assembly to call a constitutional convention to permit using public tax funds for educating children in private segregated schools. Lawrence County Leads In State Wool Show At Harrisburg

Lawrence County farmers dominated the opening day of the Pennsylvania State Farm Show in Harrisburg with grand champion Merino ram, four firsts, and four seconds in wool fleece judging. George Bolinger of New Castle placed high in wool judging, while the Lawrence County Wool Growers Assn won Medium Wool Fleeces. The Susquehanna County group took second. Attendance was among the smallest since 1947 due to hazardous highway conditions.

First Fatal Crashes On New Northeast Extension Turnpike

Two Philadelphians die in a crash on the recently opened Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike ten miles south of the Lehigh Valley Interchange near Allentown. Benjamin Brooks age 40 and Paul Springer 32 died. Brooks’ car skidded on ice and hit a divider and another car driven by Daniel Delato of Coaldale injured Delato and his wife Isabelle 50 and Richard Evans.
