Pope to mediate Beagle Channel dispute between Argentina and Chile
Argentina and Chile agreed to begin troop pullbacks and submit the Beagle Channel island dispute to mediation by Pope John Paul II. Argentine and Chilean foreign ministers met with Papal envoy Cardinal Antonio Samore in Montevideo to sign documents seeking nonbinding papal mediation and define a troop withdrawal to early 1977 positions.
