Philadelphia authorities arrest three men in a four way probe into the deaths of three inmates at the state hospital for the insane and the severe beating of a fourth. One suspect allegedly signed a confession admitting the fatal beating. Arraignments and charges of homicide or perjury, with conduct of the probe by welfare, police, coroner and district attorney offices, follow the December death of a former inmate.
Death records announce William Stiff a 2 year old of Bessemer and Lillian Boots Loeffler a 36 year old of College HN Beaver Falls. The notice lists both deaths dated Thursday January 9 1940 in the record.

London dispatch from January reports heavy snow across Europe likely to pause both British and German bombing and stall any Southeast Europe invasion. Weather cripples tanks and trucks, and with foggy skies planes cannot see. Hitler may push toward Turkey via Bulgaria, eyeing Persian oil fields, while Bulgaria and Turkey would resist. field forces could be sizable, but winter weather could force a continued pause. The new Service Battery of 180th Field Artillery delays induction as Lieuts Goehming Atkinson and Eakin depart to Carlisle Barracks Harrisburg for medicals before service. Medical exams for Battery F and the new service will occur Monday at the armory with Pittsburgh doctors absent. Recruitment continues with 10 men transferred from Battery PL and many applications pending. Mechanical experience welcome as room remains.
Italian high command reports enemy bombing of Naples and Palermo with a submarine sunk. Bombs fell into the sea and city damage included 15 buildings and a church. Five killed and about 30 injured in Naples. Palermo reported no casualties.
Fire of undetermined origin today devastated Horton Hall at Cheshire Academy a historic prep school in Cheshire Connecticut. The blaze caused an estimated loss of $200,000 damaging the dormitory and classroom building.
Italian forces in the Libyan desert faced a near paralysis as British units under Gen. Archibald Wavell closed in on Tobruk. Air reconnaissance found no Italian troop movements in the region and observers feared a desperate Italian stand at Benghazi. Tobruk was described as virtually cut off with reinforcements from the west now unlikely as British mechanized forces controlled the sea approach.
Rev C R Thayer of Saxonburg has been extended a call to lead the Third United Presbyterian church. At a congregational meeting Wednesday he received an almost unanimous vote in favor. If he accepts, he will begin duties around February 1 under Rev W E Minteer of Ellwood City who presided.

Teams will gather to train in camps from Mississippi to Florida, Tennessee, and southward, as roosted rooks and old timers look to showcase form.
