General Dwight D. Eisenhower departed Washington for Paris to bolster Europe’s defenses against Communist aggression. He said the mission aims for security and tranquility worldwide as his plane lifted off at 12 45 p m EST after a half hour of ceremonies with his wife at the air terminal.
President Truman reviewed Communist threats with General Eisenhower who prepared to depart for command of mutual defense forces in Western Europe. Chicago January 6 The nation s major railroads plan to ask the Interstate Commerce Commission to approve a six percent increase in freight rates to provide more than 400 million dollars a year in added revenue. Road officers announced the decision after a two day Chicago conference saying the move supersedes a four percent hike filed December 1 by eastern lines. They cited wage increases for operating employees as the reason for the request.
Robert M. Corbin, 32, of York, was found guilty of first degree murder by a jury for the April death of 62-year-old housekeeper Anna Bittle. Eight jurors recommended life. Corbin faces sentencing later in York with Judge Walter I. Anderson presiding. A related note covers a North Chicago fire that killed four in a family of four when an oil stove exploded.

Mrs. Minnie Roberts aged 78 of 119 White street Sharon died in Buhl hospital Sharon after a flash fire in her home. Floyd A Nowling of 209 East Lincoln avenue is her nephew. The blaze critically burned her Friday night.
Police Capt. Edwin T. Willdridge, 64, died from a cerebral hemorrhage suffered during a skirmish with Bell Telephone pickets in Philadelphia. The incident occurred amid ongoing picketing by the company’s accounting employees yesterday.
