Fire, blast damages city home on Hawthorne Street
Dennis Gates home at 401 Hawthorne Street was rocked by a fire and an explosion around 5:30 p.m. caused by a short circuit in an extension cord to a television. Flames spread from curtains to much of the house, about $8,000 damage. The incident damaged furniture and briefly hindered fire operations when hydrant problems slowed water flow. George Malizia owns the home at 403 Hawthorne Street.
