New Castle Council meets Wednesday at West Side School with Dr Harold Sprinzen speaking on marriage counsel and a nominating committee to be elected. Open to PTA members and school staff.
A large sum in $20 and $50 bills was stolen from a car parked on Cascade Street near Croton Avenue between 3 and 7 p.m. yesterday. The right door was pried open with a sharp instrument. the victim Joseph Force did not disclose the total amount to police.

City police ordered Mahoningtown shop owners to stop selling shore pellet guns after several boys were caught using them at a Saturday matinee in Pens Theater. Local authorities warned parents and retailers to curb sales to minors and prevent further incidents.

He was married to Grace R Porter Shaffer surviving with wife a daughter Barbara Shaffer Toppenish Washington a son David Shaffer Virginia Beach Virginia four brothers Harry Clarence Shaffer of Rilwood City Thomas Shaffer of Tampa Florida and Jess Shaffer of New Castle and two grandchildren. Swimming classes resume today for the Lawrence County chapter of the Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children at 7 p m at Gye Ben Frank Nin Junior High School pool. Kindergarten classes sponsored by PARC resume tomorrow at 9 45 a m with Mrs James Thompson teaching at Highland UP Church and Mrs John Fellner at Trinity Lutheran Church Ellwood City. Applications are available at the PARC office for enrollment of retarded children ages 4 to 6. Classes prepare children for special education in public schools emphasizing social adjustments speech and play. A monthly business meeting will not be held January 6. PARC members will hear Dr Theodore F Johnson executive director of the Allegheny Chapter of PARC at the 48th anniversary banquet January 28 in First Presbyterian Church. PARC is a United Fund agency.

New Castle state police logged 23 traffic arrests on highways in Lawrence County during the New Year weekend led by speeding and reckless driving. Two noninjury crashes were investigated. Francis Pogogelec, 44, of 206 E Moody Ave, sustained a cut eyebrow and bruised cheek from a fall and was treated and released at St Francis Hospital.
Four local officials visited Washington to review federal and state grants for New Castle transportation studies including a minibus feasibility and a general transportation survey. City representatives planned talks with state officials and a later meeting with federal grant staff.
Three head of beef cattle valued at 700 dollars were stolen from farmer John Misco on Frew Mill Road. The owners notified state police at the New Castle substation and offer a 200 dollar reward for arrest and conviction of those responsible.
