Congress convened at noon in a packed Capitol as the 73rd Congress began its regular session. President Roosevelt addressed a joint session in person, marking a rare early appearance, while tax revision and New Deal coordination dominated the agenda.
Homeless wanderers found on rail roads and state highways in Lawrence county will be sent to a federal camp in Allegheny county. State officials were presented with a notice for where wanderers should be sent and applications by the persons may be made. If a wanderer lacks Pennsylvania residence, plans to send them to their home state are reported.
In a formal state of the union style address, President Roosevelt tells Congress the nation has progressed on the road to recovery and must consolidate gains. He envisions a knitting together of recovery moves into a durable structure while avoiding New Deal reversals. Proposals will come piecemeal as the session proceeds.

Harrisburg January 3 The commonwealth began 1934 with a general fund balance of 31,062,559 as per the state treasurer. Bond sales of 25 million for relief and welfare boosted the total and two new funds appeared: the state stores fund at 47,490 and the liquor license fund at 1,305,650.
Dr Ben G Graham former New Castle school head was re-elected Superintendent of Pittsburgh schools for six years at a salary of 13500 dollars per year. The unanimous vote of 11 board members present out of 15 approved the selection late yesterday.

Walter Reppin a 73 year old Newark New Jersey man known as a youth who never had a chance has won a stay of execution. Attorneys filed with the state supreme court an appeal from El Paso district court denial of a motion to set aside his guilty plea to murder.
Patsy Ferruccio, 16, Canton Ohio, was found guilty of the October 18 robbery of the First National Bank of Fredonia and ordered to serve five to ten years in the Western penitentiary. He also faces up to two years on a larceny charge. His brother Angelo Ferruccio is already serving nine to 18 years in the same prison. About $4,126 was taken.
Mercer Pa Jan 3 Joe Spano 25 Greenville Italian and Rose Ferruccio 21 with Constance Ferruccio Canton Ohio are jailed after Spano allegedly made a forced confession to involvement in the October 18 1933 Fredonia National Bank robbery. Angleo Ferruccio and Patsy Ferruccio already received prison terms.
In Beverly Hills on January 3 a Columbia Stanford football game drew attention as Herbert Hoover, a Stanford alum, received a warm reception. The writer, a Columbia grad, recalls a tenor singing course and jokes about pig skin versus porcupine hide while noting sports and other year trends.

Beaver county oil men prepare to drill on Scott Munnell farm in Slippery Rock township marking the first oil effort in the area in years. Rigging rises and drilling should start within a week as crews plan to reach about 5000 feet seeking the oil sand. Historical notes recall amber oil discoveries and prior wells in the Slippery Rock valley, including a notable one damaged during efforts to enlarge the pool.
Three men, with a small arsenal in a high powered car, were held in Toledo jail on investigation linked to midwest bank robberies. Deputies chased them to near Alvordton, arresting James O Rourke 30 Frank Patterson 34 Milwaukee and William Green 29 Toledo. In the car were five pistols a shotgun and a rifle.
Viscount Churchill of Wychwood, a noted banking and shipping leader, died today at Langlee House in Galashiels Scotland. He was 69. The death was reported from London where the tribute highlighted his prominent role in finance and shipping.
In Kittanning Pennsylvania on January 3 Mrs Mary Barbarich a prominent Armstrong County resident was laid to rest. A specially designed casket measuring 31 inches wide and 12 inches deep housed her 450 pound body.
Over 2,000 CWA employees are on the rolls with more than 300 at work in city parks. In Cascade Park old buildings are torn down and rebuilt, Cunningham Park clears stumps for an athletic field, Dean Park levels a site, Gunton Park work begins, Canyon Street sewer construction starts, and school brickwork is being pointed. The Lawrence County project payroll nears $35,000 weekly with 500 more workers expected.
Major L W Fagg of the United States infantry conducted the annual federal inspection of Troop F 103rd cavalry in the armory. He complimented officers and men on their condition despite inadequate armory facilities. The troop showed snappy drill after a few weeks of indoor practice and will hold NCO school next Monday followed by drills on January 12. Three new men will be enlisted to restore full strength.

State highway patrolmen are searching for a hit and run driver who struck 22 year old Miss Helen Elms near the edge of West Pittsburg road just outside city limits around seven last night. She was bruised and taken to a nearby residence before a physician was summoned and she was moved to New Castle hospital.
Sir John Simon, Britain's foreign secretary, was to meet Premier Benito Mussolini in Rome for a discussion on the disarmament crisis and Italy's plan to reorganize the League of Nations. Simon's role was mainly that of listener as Mussolini led the talks.
