British liner Glen Gyle sunk by submarine in Mediterranean

London reports the British liner Glen Gyle bound from Yokohama to Genoa was torpedoed in the Mediterranean with heavy loss of life. Several Americans among the passengers. 100 survivors rescued. The 9000 ton ship, built 1914, hailed from Glasgow and faced near the Persia sinking area. Survivors were taken to Malta as the submarine threat grows.

Judge Porter Retires After Eleven Years on Lawrence County Bench

Judge William E. Porter retires from the 58th judicial district after 11 years on the bench. He succeeded Judge W. D. Wallace for a ten year term and, due to a change in election laws, secured an additional year. Porter earned a statewide reputation for Brooks license law interpretations and led a notable juvenile court program focused on reform. He is described as fair, impartial, and merciful, with a record of many reversals in higher courts and a lasting trust in Lawrence County.

Fall From Silo Ends In Death

Ed K. Cover a Pulaski township resident died Sunday afternoon at 2 15 after falling from a silo near the barn while feeding stock. Skull fracture caused death. He would have been 57 in May. Dr Dallas Shaffer Heads to Philippines Voyage

Dr Dallas Shaffer a veterinarian with the war department leaves Pearson street to sail from Vancouver on the Mont Eagle for the Philippines with stops in China and Honolulu. He previously served five years in the Philippines and has resided in St. Louis since returning to the United States.

Hospital Corps To Be Inspected by U S Army Officers

The hospital corps of the First Regiment of Calvary National Guard of Pennsylvania under Major Dr Allan W Urmson will be inspected by U S Army officers on January 29. The corps hall is on the third floor of the Electric company building and the inspection will be conducted by Major Koerper U S A.

Mrs Rearic Dies At The Hospital In Ellwood City

Mrs William Rearic aged 54 died at Ellwood City Hospital after a long rheumatism illness. Wife of William Rearic restaurateur of New Castle she leaves two children Mrs H E Helling Ellwood City and Norman Rearie. Surviving brothers and sisters listed include Mrs E B Cameron Pittsburg and C C Crill Pittsburg. Funeral Tuesday at Epworth M E church New Castle with interment Oak Park cemetery.

Judge S. Plummer Emery Elected and Local Lineage Noted

Judge S. Plummer Emery took the oath of office this morning. He is a son of William S. and Margaret C. Emery of New Castle, born there, and a member of a prominent local family. His grandfather David Emery was an early settler and first sheriff of Lawrence County in 1849. Emery graduated from Geneva College in 1887 and was admitted to the bar in 1889, later serving as district attorney and council member.

Martin Not in Service As Treasurer

Treasurer elect C. H. Martin has not yet assumed duties as the city treasurer due to the council’s inaction on his bond. Meanwhile C. C. Duff remains tax collector and will only transfer the treasurer duties when Martin is qualified. City Controller Alvah L. Porter has begun duties in the finance office, succeeding Paul M. Raney.

Judge Emery Sets Motions In Brief Court Session
