Rep. Ken Hechler said 38 Kentucky coal miners might have survived if self rescue gas masks mandated by the Mine Safety Act had been used. Hechler blamed Finley Coal Co. for cutting corners as the Hyden mine explosion, now blamed on dynamite, killed the men.

United Press International reports the New Year holiday weekend death toll neared 400 to 500 dead with 19 000 to 23 000 injured as 214 people were killed in traffic crashes by 8 a m EST. California led with 21 fatalities while New York Michigan Texas Illinois Ohio and Massachusetts also reported multiple deaths. A New York Thruway crash near Buffalo killed five. four teens died in a Rock Falls auto train collision. a Michigan crash killed four in Lake Odessa and a Corpus Christi wreck claimed three sisters and a teen companion.
Former New Castle resident Carol Hall died when the car she rode in was rear ended on Rt. 31 in Brockport yesterday. Her husband Robert E. Hall was listed in critical condition at St. Mary Hospital in Rochester. Private services planned.
Wolf Zalmonson, 31, reportedly the alleged 12th man in the Leningrad hijacking case, is set for trial January 5. He is linked to siblings Israel and Silva Zalmonson sentenced earlier, and to Eduard Kuznetsov. Other trials for Zionist treason targets in Leningrad and across Odessa Kishinev Riga were planned the same week with possible death penalties for several.
UPI reports say allied forces accuse Viet Cong and North Vietnamese of 46 violations during the New Year cease-fire. In Cambodia, 68 Communists were killed in two battles, while Americans suffered higher casualties than during the Christmas truce. Five Americans killed in an ambush in the Mekong Delta. Cambodian and allied forces clash to reopen Highway 4. Cambodian official Am Rong notes the capture of 30 Chinese-made machine guns.
The 91st Congress set to adjourn after an extended session tied to the supersonic transport issue. Sen. William Proxmire agrees to drop filibuster plans, allowing a showdown vote on SST in the next session while a continuing resolution funds the Transportation Department at 1970 rates through March 31. Nixon aides note a potential special session.
A Northeast snowstorm blankets the region with as much as 20 inches in places. In Wyoming the Grand Teton base camp is stranded with 3,700 feet to summit and 45 mph winds. Washington D.C. sees 15 inches. New York City reports 5 to 8 inches and a snow emergency is extended. flights are halted at Washington airports.

Robert William Duncan, born at 6 30 a m yesterday in Mary Evans Hospital Ellwood City, is Lawrence County's New Year's baby. He joins three sisters of Mr and Mrs Robert R Duncan. Gifts include food clothing bank accounts for the family. The county's second New Year's baby arrived at St Francis Hospital a girl born to Mr and Mrs Larry Force at 4 49 p m. Mrs Force is Gloria Hairhoger.
