Eight United States Marines were shot and killed with two wounded during an ambush in Archapaga jungle area between Ocotal and Apali Nicaragua. The patrol faced hidden assailants linked to insurgent bands led by Augustino. Richard J. Ryan reports from Managua.
Joseph A. Harbaugh United States Marine killed with seven others in an ambush by Nicaraguan rebels on December 31. His sister Miss Anna May Harbaugh lives in this city. father Albert Harbaugh of 1430 Boyle Street Pittsburgh is listed. A brother Buster died in a hunting accident a year ago. Another brother John Harbaugh serves with the Marines in China.
Woman Explorer Kane Pa January 2 reports freezing weather breaks winter record as the mercury records 11 below this morning the lowest temperature in the recent cold spell in Kane.
In upper Burma's Thar Awady region, 200 Burmese rebels were reported killed as 1,000 British troops attacked their jungle stronghold. Seventeen rebel officers were among the dead, while government forces reportedly suffered no casualties. Soldiers found a jungle palace scene with an unknown flag atop a tower during the operation.
The Senate's formal probe into national unemployment relief and drought measures begins Monday. Secretary Hyde will testify on the $45 million farm loan plan, with Red Cross chair John Barton Payne and officials from the Army Engineers and Bureau of Public Roads among witnesses.
Corporal Marcus White of the State Police at Mercer will seek extradition of Sam Raniolo of Youngstown identified by witnesses as a fourth bandit in the December robberies of Dr. Charles Smyser and the Roux feed store in New Wilmington. He says the merger would benefit employees shippers and the traveling public reduce unemployment stabilize rates improve service cut energy waste and simplify regulation and finances. He credits President Hoover with timely support easing ICC workload.
Frank Howells at the State penitentiary sent a note of thanks to W Glen Dague for affidavits claiming Dague committed the holdup for which Howells serves a fifteen year sentence. Dague is jailed in New Castle Pa awaiting execution for the Slaying of Corporal Brady Paul.
A downtown Monessen blaze following a large explosion caused an estimated 200000 to 250000 in damages. Windows were shattered over a block radius and more than twenty people were forced from their beds. Two buildings were razed and several others damaged as fire crews from Donora and Charleroi aided local firefighters. The initial blast is believed to have originated at Sam Steinman fruit store in the Vermeceni building on Donner avenue.

A fire at the Greenville Freight Terminal of the Pennsylvania Railway in Jersey City caused damage near 1 million dollars. Thirty cars of merchandise were destroyed in the blaze, officials said.
New York officials announced Supreme Court Justice Joseph Force Crater, who vanished in August 1930, is officially removed from the payroll. Also dropped were confidential attendant Joseph L Mara and secretary Frederic Johnson. The justice had remained on the books to year end. back pay questions linger.
Paris reports conflicting notices on Marshal Joffre as officials say he remains unconscious after more than 20 hours. A radio Eiffel Tower broadcast claimed death, then a government statement denied it while doctors issued bulletins of no change in his condition.

Miss Frances Carey executive secretary of the local YWCA was injured by a fall on North Jefferson street but is not seriously hurt. She was confined at Jameson Memorial hospital with back pain but expected to recover soon. Carey had recently returned from Atlantic City and had spent time at Overlook Sanitarium New Wilmington.
Alfred Kaplan age 23 of Irwin was killed when the car he drove crashed into a telegraph pole. Richard Kiehl of Jacktown and Noble Barton of Irwin were injured and hospitalized. Kaplan was returning guests from his parents silver wedding anniversary celebration.
New York City recorded fifteen deaths linked to New Year celebrations. Police records show seven cases of self harm. More than fifty people were treated for alcohol-related issues in local hospitals.
Donna Coutt age one month Moravia and Alfred J Morton age 37 noted. Frank Cagnetti age 23 and living at 611 Pearson Street is listed in the death notices.
Legal representatives for Youngstown Sheet & Tube and Bethlehem Steel filed a motion for a new trial in common pleas court in Youngstown. The filing claims Judge Jenkins erred in law and that the verdict against the merger is not supported by the evidence after a 15 week hearing. No date set for the new trial.
The 87th annual AAAS convention closes with a final session in Cleveland as Dr Pay R Heyl of the U S Bureau of Standards presents his theory weighing the earth. The program lists a dozen remaining group meetings of affiliated scientific organizations.
