F. G. Beer buys the Lawrence Monumental Works on East Washington Street from attorney W. K. Hugus representing creditors of J. B. Thomas. Beer plans to operate at the present location after Thomas built the plant largely on borrowed capital and could not meet bills, creditors taking charge with heavy losses anticipated.
New York detective Melville Halstead pursued pickpockets on January 2. He nabbed the offender and recovered $22 that had been taken from him, then brought the suspect to court.
London reports that six new armies of about 800 000 men will be placed in the field. Tomorrow national services are ordered across England for allied success with Field Marshal Sir John French's force merging into volunteer training groups.

In Gross court Alderman Gross dismissed charges against Mike Volinas Kasmer Kosloskie for assault and battery and disorderly conduct. John Rudis cleared of disorderly conduct while the prosecutor bore costs. Adam Polcavish also cleared of disorderly conduct charges.
