Rep. Glenn R. Davis showed up with a black eye at the dedication of a new technical institute. Sen. William Proxmire appeared in Washington with both eyes swollen and declined to explain the injuries. Davis said his injury came from an overzealous paddleboard partner.

A New York State man William W. Schmitt 29 his wife Penelope 28 and their two children William W. Jr. 4 and Heidie 19 months were killed when their single engine Piper Comanche crashed and burned while en route from Morgantown West Virginia to Buffalo New York. The crash occurred in a field off Pa 66 about 15 miles north of Greensburg. The front section was buried in soft earth. Cause under investigation.
A federal grand jury questioned officials of the McGraw-Hill Book Co. and examined records and manuscripts yesterday in its ongoing probe of Clifford Irving's discredited Howard Hughes autobiography.
In Tokyo the Diet clashed over Prime Minister Eisaku Sato declaring Taiwan part of the mainland China as a possible concession line. U.S. officials insist Nixon made no secret deal with Beijing and will honor existing alliances.
A powerful quake struck central Japan during dinner time, rocking Tokyo and causing objects to fall from shelves. No immediate casualties or major damage reported. The epicenter was near Hachijo Island, about 185 miles south of Tokyo, with intensity measured at 6 on the Japanese scale and 7.0 on the Richter scale per UPI and USGS sources.
