Race coverage notes many runners exhausted along the route with a manager following racers by car at 10 o clock. John Fulkman of Westminster College was second, while Italian Bill Dellillo finished third in the contest.
Allen Cartwright finished in 3 hours 16 minutes at 26 minutes after 1 o clock crossing the tape before the YMCA. He set marathon records for this section of the country and faced a dense crowd near the Diamond causing him to stray toward Jefferson street. John A Falkman No 12 New Wilmington finished second, closely followed by No 79 Bill Dellillo.
Cartwright Allen the 19 year old tin worker from DuShane street won the marathon completing 21 miles without prior long distance training and leading at Edenburg. John Fulkman Westminster student age 19 finished second despite limited long distance prep and was strong through Washington street bridge and Covert's station. Bill Dellillo 21 New Castle box factory employee placed third, aided by athletic background with N C I A baseball, finishing just behind Falkman. All three in good shape after the race.
The first three finishers will receive the three prizes if all runners are found clear at each checking point and the results will be finalized and announced Saturday.
The News Marathon in Girard lists 43 racers starting at 10 10 this morning identified by numbers and names including B F Taylor J R Thompson Harry H Glitch Fred Shatzer and John A Fulkman New Wilmington along with others such as Lorain Wilson Thomas Withers R W Ellis Perry Hart Levi Young and more. The adjoining race account refers to entrants by number for identification.
The race concluded with Cartwright surging from Lowellville to the finish on Washington Street, despite heavy mud and fatigue. Spectators watched as he staggered yet finished in strong form, while judges verify the distance as others quit or mispaced along the route.
Winners in The News Marathon will receive a gold watch bronze cup gas lamp basket candy and fruit a silver smoking set baseball shoes shirts scarves pins and more from various local merchants. Prizes announced at Harris Family theater will be awarded next Tuesday evening with seats reserved by Charles E. Dempsey.
A wild city crowd witnessed Allen Cartwright win the marathon finishing near the West Washington street hill. Spectators perched on poles and wagons as police helped Cartwright through the Y M C A area with cheers and a sea of hats. Crowd enthusiasm filled streets from the diamond to Edenburg and beyond as telephones buzzed with race updates.
The News Marathon prize winners will be presented next Tuesday evening at the Harris Family theatre near the close of the first evening performance. The stage will feature a parlor setting and prizes will be presented by President John Harris unless prevented. Manager Dempsey would present in his absence. A reserved section will hold the Marathon runners with special courtesy.
A youth conference will be held Monday evening at the Reformed Presbyterian church. Rev. J. S. Martin will deliver the principal address to attendees.
A carload of runners toured the town with Postmaster John A. McKee and Mayor Harry Lusk among those present. Fire Chief Frank Connery, former Mayor Charles Warnock, Jimmy Dunn, Dr. Balsinger, Fred L. Rentz and C. Ed. Brown joined the procession, though some chose to stay back to avoid questions about not starting. Continued on Fourth Page.
In Indianapolis Bryan lambasted the Kern faction during a legislature address. He praised Nebraska and Oregon methods for popular Senate elections, saying Indiana erred by not adopting the plan. Kern sat nearby as Bryan criticized the defeated candidate’s politics and route to the U S Senate.
Charles George, number 78, led the Marathon through Youngstown with a long lead and is to receive a handsome $35 suit from the Youngstown Italian merchants, according to reports circulated in the city at noon.

Shenango township resident Joseph A Kelley died Saturday morning after a brief illness. Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday with departures from his home at 12:30 pm and services at Savannah M E Church at 2 pm.
New York Feb 27 Carl Fischer Hansen convicted of subornation of perjury prepared to start his year long sentence at Blackwell's Island penitentiary after breakfast in the Tombs. He will shovel coal and peel potatoes for work. His wife plans divorce proceedings against him after his release.
The Republic Iron and Steel company Bessemer plant in Youngstown will restart Sunday morning after a shutdown caused by high river water. Local workers expect normal operations to resume as rainfall conditions improve.

Joseph A. Kelly, 72, of Shenango Township, has died. Funeral arrangements are pending and services will be announced by the family.

Blackwood over deaths of Minnie Dearolph and Elizabeth Carnes amid alleged criminal operations. Prosecution led by County Detective Logan includes A W Gardner embezzlement, T W Conroy fraud, and other indictments against Cronin Ward Kerr Gastinger Breen, Lischin, Tomala and Kormashick alias Marsha with break in and false pretense charges.
