Michele Goodman-Jones, a 61 year old New Castle businesswoman, is named a 2014 50 Women of Excellence by the New Pittsburgh Courier. She runs Michele Goodman Studios and serves as Lawrence County image consultant for the PA Workwear program at 24 E Washington St. and has long promoted manners and professional grooming. Her nomination came from Ralph P. Watson of Classic Events.

Propane blast severely burns man in New Castle garage
Explosion at 704 Harbor St Sunday evening demolished a workshop and injured a man identified as Francis Owens. Firefighters say a pilot light valve was left open, LP gas filled the workshop, and a spark caused the blast lifting the garage six inches. Building valued at 10,000 with contents at 50,000. victim hospitalized after initial care.

A Shenango Township man was severely burned Sunday night while transferring propane when a regulator failed. Richard J. Maxwell Jr., 49, of 702 Broadway Ave, was flown to Pittsburgh after the incident and listed in good condition at West Penn Hospital. Fire officials traced the blaze to a faulty regulator, with 25 firefighters battling a kitchen fire during cold weather. No firefighter injuries were reported as a state fire marshal investigates.
