Neighbor alerts family to fire at city residence
A neighbor woke Dan and Kristin Effinite at 201 E. Northview Ave as a side porch caught fire at 12:33 a.m. Firefighters arrived in four minutes, fought flames spreading to the living room, and cited icy conditions. Damage estimated at 20,000 for the structure and 35,000 for contents. The couple and their dog and turtle escaped. fire marshal investigating.

Young swimmers rise with New Castle YMCA Silver Sharks
Zach Bell and David Miller, both 14, joined the New Castle YMCA Silver Sharks after being drawn to water and competition. The 73-member team went undefeated in 15 regular-season meets and won the Northwest Conference Section A Championship at Grove City YMCA. Thirty-one swimmers qualified for the district meet at Penn State in events including the 100 and 200 freestyle and 4x200 relay, with coach Anita Murphy crediting hard work and long practice hours.
