Colorful ceremonies observing George Washington's birthday were held at the base of the Washington Monument yesterday. Victor Temple of Marlow Heights, Maryland, served as one of the flag bearers during the National League of Masonic Clubs event.
Tuesday night features snow in the northern Plains and western Great Lakes with showers in the Pacific Northwest and rain in the mid Mississippi Valley and Gulf Coast. The board weighs using contingencies and asks UHURU to pursue savings and negotiate fees, while noting potential precedent concerns.
A Lawrence County Court hearing addressed a pollution charge by the state Department of Environmental Resources against Pennsylvania Power Company. The case concerns five coal-fired boilers at the West Pittsburg plant allegedly emitting pollutants at twice the legal limit.
The county will no longer accept children from Armstrong Venango or Butler for the detention home near the courthouse. Inmates from other counties will be kept out while local placements rise from 94 in 1962 to 301 in 1970. Vandalism is up and tougher jail isolation could follow.
