Phyllis Lutz Williams, once 9, became the first civilian treated with penicillin for osteomyelitis, saving her leg. The extended 1943 ordeal involved Her father Dr. Raymond Lutz in service, a long hospital stay at Deshon V A hospital in Butler, and 10 weeks of penicillin therapy watched by her mother. Now 30 with three daughters, she lives in Fairlawn Ohio with Lt Col Bruce H Williams, a Korea and Vietnam veteran, and reflects on the medical miracle.

Seven police killed during weekend in nationwide toll
Seven law enforcement officers died in separate weekend incidents, raising the week’s total to eleven. In Philadelphia two patrolmen were found shot, while a Miami area officer was shot near a housing project. Indiana state trooper and a town marshal fell in Saint John gunfight, and a Greenville officer was killed as an assailant later killed himself. Philadelphia’s John McEntee, 25, was deemed executed after stopping youths, and Joseph Kelly, 45, was found slumped in his car after being shot. Two teens face charges. In Saint John, Trooper John Streau, 25, and Marshal James Larimar, 55, died questioning two men in a stolen car. Trooper Pete Popplewell Jr., 29, was wounded. A suspect hospitalized. another in custody. New York City Patrolman Horace Lord, 25, died in a narcotics probe on Manhattan’s Upper West.

Nuns Hurt as Convent Fire Strikes Marywood College
Eight nuns were injured and two critically when a convent at Marywood College burned during an early morning fire. A roof blew off, sending a firefighter tumbling down stairs. more than 250 firefighters fought the blaze as many sisters escaped by jumping from second and third story windows. Critical patients included Sister Mary Violet Float, 30, and Sister Rose Mary Ludwig, 23. others were admitted to Scranton Community Medical Center and Scranton State General Hospital. The remaining nuns and 36 workers were evacuated.

Teen suspect questioned in strangling of 4 year old in Ohio
